The Saudi national team coach, Donis, confirmed that the “high spirit” represents one of the main strengths of the Green before facing the UAE in the final of the Gulf Cup “Gulf 27,” emphasizing the importance of approaching the match with a team spirit and adhering to tactical instructions, in a match expected to be strong and difficult from a tactical standpoint.
Donis said at the press conference before the final: “We will face a very organized team, with good players and a coach who is clear tactically, and I expect a strong and difficult match.”
He explained that the team’s preparation for the final focused on several tactical aspects, including high pressing, defensive organization, building play, and handling the ball in midfield, along with the required movements at different stages of the match.
He added: “We have done significant work on the defensive and tactical side, and we need to continue that, while improving execution and movements in the final third, especially inside the penalty area.”
Donis emphasized the importance of the team appearing as a single unit during the final, saying: “We want to be one group of 11 players, from the forward to the goalkeeper, and to be close and organized, with every player ready to implement the tactical instructions.”
He continued: “The most important point for us is the high spirit; all players are ready to fight for every ball and cover spaces.”
Regarding the previous match against Qatar in the semifinals, Donis pointed out that every match provides the team with new lessons, explaining that facing a defensively compact team for 120 minutes was difficult and required correct decisions and movements in the final third.
He said: “It was not easy to face a team that plays with a low defensive block for 120 minutes. Against organized teams, our decisions must be correct and our movements better in the final third.”
He noted that the defensive work against Qatar was good, pointing out that the first shot from the Qatari team came in the 89th minute, which reflects the defensive organization that the Green displayed during the match.
He confirmed that the team has the required quality, but it needs to improve its attacking decisions and movements, especially against teams that rely on organization and compactness, hoping that attacking players will get more minutes with their clubs after the tournament, which will help them develop these aspects.
Donis addressed the physical aspect, given that the team has played five matches in 14 days, in addition to the weather conditions, confirming that physical readiness will be an important factor in selecting the lineup that will play in the final.
He explained that the team is suffering from some injuries, and that several players requested to come off during the last match, while the medical staff recommended resting some players, stressing that the most important thing after playing 120 minutes is to assess the players’ condition and know who will be physically ready to help in the final.
Donis concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the final requires the highest levels of focus, discipline, and spirit, with the players’ ability to execute instructions and work as a single group against an Emirati team that enjoys organization and tactical clarity.
