وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية بأن الزلزال وقع جنوب جزر فيجي، وكان على عمق 548.4 كيلومترًا، وعلى بعد 23.598 كيلومترًا جنوب المحيط.
وتقع جزر فيجي في منطقة تسمى بـ”حزام النار” في المحيط الهادئ، والتي تتعرض من وقت لآخر للعديد من الهزات والزلازل الارتدادية التي قد تكون قوية في بعض الأحيان.
