Natural gas futures prices in Europe and Britain rose by more than 10% during today’s trading, after Iran announced that the United States must lift the sanctions imposed on it, pay compensation, and fulfill a number of other conditions before reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Futures prices for Dutch gas – the European benchmark – for delivery in September increased by 10.62% to €61.445 ($70.98) per megawatt-hour.
Meanwhile, British gas futures surged by 10.98% to about £51.48 ($69.60) per megawatt-hour.
Filling the Reservoirs
European natural gas prices had risen to their highest levels last month, as benchmark futures contracts for gas increased for the second consecutive day by 3.6%, amid growing concerns about global liquefied natural gas supplies.
Europe faces a significant challenge in replenishing gas stocks before the upcoming winter, at a time when limited global supplies have become more expensive.
Geopolitical Developments
The Dutch benchmark gas contract for next month rose to about €50.65 per megawatt-hour, while the similar British contract increased by about 5%, with markets reacting cautiously to geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the renewed conflict between the United States and Iran.
The war in the Middle East has already led to a significant disruption of global energy flows, including about one-fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas supplies.
