وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية، في بيان، أن الزلزال كان على عمق 122 كيلومترًا.
ولم ترد تقارير عن تسجيل خسائر بشرية أو أضرار مادية جراء الزلزال.
وتقع تشيلي في منطقة تسمى “حزام النار”، وهي قوس من التصدعات التي تحيط بحوض المحيط الهادئ، ومعرضة لزلازل متكررة ونشاط بركاني.
