The Finalesima Cup between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled

UEFA has announced the cancellation of the Finalesima Cup match that was scheduled to be held between Spain and Argentina in Qatar this month.

UEFA said in an official statement: “Following lengthy discussions between UEFA and the organizing authorities in Qatar, it was announced today that, given the current political situation in the region, the final match between Euro 2024 winners Spain and Copa America 2024 champions Argentina cannot take place as hoped in Qatar on March 27.”.

Disappointment among organizers

The statement added: “It is a great disappointment to UEFA and the organizers that circumstances and timing have deprived the two teams of the opportunity to compete for the Cup in Qatar, a country that has repeatedly proven its ability to organize world-class international events in modern and state-of-the-art facilities.”.

Attempts to save the tournament are met with rejection

UEFA explained that it tried to find alternatives to save the tournament, but all of them ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentine Football Association. The first option was to hold the match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid on the original date, with the fans distributed equally between the two teams, but Argentina rejected this proposal.

The second option was to hold the tournament in two matches; the first at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium on March 27, and the second in Buenos Aires during an international break before the European Championship and Copa America 2028, which would have ensured an equal distribution of fans, but this proposal was also rejected.

Additional proposals were not accepted

UEFA also sought a commitment from Argentina that if a neutral venue in Europe were found, the match could be played on March 27, as planned and announced on December 18, 2025, or on the alternative date of March 30, but this proposal was also rejected.

Argentina submitted a counter-proposal, according to a statement from UEFA, to hold the match after the World Cup, but the lack of available dates for the Spanish national team led to the exclusion of this option.

Final decision

In the end, contrary to the original plan agreed upon to hold the match on March 27, Argentina announced its readiness to play on March 31, a date that turned out to be unsuitable, so it was ultimately decided to cancel the 2026 edition of the Finalesima tournament.
