The British markets are turning their attention to inflation data next week, amid expectations of a surge in consumer prices, while the Bank of England continues to tread carefully regarding the monetary policy path, with the increasing impact of the AI-related memory chip shortage and rising energy costs.

Inflation data is set to be released next Wednesday, with expectations that the annual inflation rate will rise to 2.9% in July, according to the average estimates of economists in a Bloomberg survey, marking the first acceleration in four months.

These expectations come amid increasing pressure on prices, as the war in Iran has contributed to rising air travel costs and its repercussions have reflected on household energy bills, while the shortage of components and chips related to AI technologies has led to higher prices for electronic devices.

Forecasts suggest that rising prices may signal the beginning of an inflationary wave that could persist throughout the second half of the year, potentially ending a period of improvement in price pressure indicators.

These developments may increase pressure on monetary policy officials at the Bank of England, especially as the repercussions of the war in Iran begin to more significantly impact prices, coinciding with the continued resilience of the British economy.

In this context, the Bank of England’s Chief Economist, Hugh Pill, has reiterated his call for an interest rate hike, maintaining his stance from the bank’s last meeting, where he was one of three members who opposed the monetary policy decision.

This comes after the British economy recorded unexpected growth in June, supported by rising temperatures and the hosting of the World Cup, raising concerns about the continued strength of economic activity at a time when inflationary pressures are increasing.
