وأفادت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية بأن مركز الزلزال كان على عمق 10 كيلومترات، وعلى بعد 88 كيلومترًا شمال شرقي الجزر.
وتونغا هي أرخبيل يضم 176 جزيرة متناثرة في جنوب المحيط الهادئ، منها 52 مأهولة فقط، وتقع في شمال غرب نيوزيلندا وأستراليا.
