37,000 migrants arrive in Yemen: figures and humanitarian challenges

Recent UN reports reveal a continued high influx of African migrants into Yemen, with over 37,000 undocumented migrants recorded in the first four months of this year. These figures highlight one of the world's busiest and most dangerous migration routes, known as the "Eastern Route," which connects the Horn of Africa to the Gulf states via Yemen.

General context: The Eastern Route and the search for hope

Migration from the Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Somalia, is a long-standing and ongoing phenomenon driven by a combination of economic, political, and climatic factors. Thousands flee extreme poverty, armed conflict, and the drought plaguing East Africa each month, heading to the Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia, in search of work and a better life. Yemen, by virtue of its strategic geographic location, serves as the primary gateway and inevitable transit point for these migrants, despite the crises plaguing the country itself.

A perilous journey amidst ongoing conflict

Migrants undertake perilous sea journeys across the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, often in flimsy boats operated by human traffickers, risking drowning and death. Once they reach the Yemeni coast, they face immense security challenges due to the years-long conflict in Yemen. Despite Yemen experiencing the world's worst humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations, it continues to receive tens of thousands of migrants who walk hundreds of kilometers through Yemeni provinces to reach the northern border.

Regional impacts and humanitarian challenges

This continuous influx places immense pressure on Yemen’s limited resources and exacerbates security and health challenges in the areas through which migrants transit. Regionally, this issue presents a significant challenge for neighboring countries, as authorities strive to control borders and combat human trafficking networks operating across them. International organizations, such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM), consistently call for concerted international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to stranded migrants and address the root causes of migration in countries of origin to ensure sustainable solutions to this escalating humanitarian crisis.
