Four Pakistani policemen killed in two attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

On Sunday, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan witnessed a new security escalation that resulted in the killing of four Pakistani policemen in two separate incidents, highlighting once again the growing security challenges facing security forces in the border regions.

Details of the attacks in Saray Norang and Banu

In an official statement issued by security authorities, Pakistani police explained that the first incident occurred in the city of Sarai Norang, where unidentified gunmen targeted a traffic police patrol. The surprise attack resulted in the death of three police officers at the scene, while the gunmen fled to an unknown location, prompting a security alert in the area to track down the perpetrators.

In a separate but equally serious incident, a police officer was assassinated in the neighboring city of Bannu as he returned home to his workplace at the police station. Sources confirmed that gunmen shot him directly, resulting in his death, in a pattern indicating a systematic targeting of security personnel off duty or during their personal travels.

The security context and the escalation of violence in the northwest

These attacks come at a time when Pakistan, particularly the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province bordering Afghanistan, is witnessing a significant increase in the frequency of armed attacks. Since the collapse of the ceasefire between the Pakistani government and the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) in late 2022, police and military forces have become prime targets for armed groups operating in the mountainous and border regions.

Security experts indicate that targeting traffic police and individual elements reflects a tactic aimed at weakening the morale of security forces and spreading terror among citizens, as well as trying to show the state’s inability to fully control those vital areas.

Repercussions and government efforts

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, suspicion often falls on local armed groups that use the rugged terrain as a refuge. Police confirmed in a statement that intensive investigations and search operations are ongoing in the towns of Sarai Nurang and Bannu to bring the perpetrators to justice.

It is worth noting that the Pakistani government has repeatedly pledged to intensify counter-terrorism operations, but the continuation of these attacks raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current security strategies and the need to strengthen intelligence and field cooperation to reduce the bloodshed among security forces.
