Saudi Arabia: 64 million riyals allocated for the maintenance of 1,037 mosques according to modern standards

As part of ongoing efforts to care for and prepare mosques for worshippers, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced the launch of a comprehensive package of service projects during November 2025. These contracts, with a total value exceeding 64 million riyals, aim to maintain, clean, and operate 1,037 mosques and prayer halls across the Makkah, Riyadh, and Qassim regions, adhering to precise technical standards that ensure the sustainability of services and operational efficiency.

Contract details and geographical distribution

The new contracts, valued at SAR 64,356,840.66, included a precise geographical distribution to cover the needs of the targeted governorates. In the Makkah region , support was directed to 300 mosques and prayer halls, with the contracts allocated for the maintenance of the first group in Al-Lith Governorate (150 mosques) and Adham Governorate (150 mosques), ensuring their full readiness to receive worshippers.

In the Riyadh region , the ministry focused its efforts on the southern governorates, with contracts covering the maintenance of 150 mosques and prayer halls in Al-Dilam Governorate, in addition to operation and cleaning contracts for 103 mosques in Al-Aflaj Governorate. In the Qassim region , which received the largest share in terms of the number of mosques, contracts covered 484 mosques, distributed between Unaizah Governorate (250 mosques) and Al-Muthnib Governorate (234 mosques).

Development context and the importance of modern standards

This step is not merely about periodic maintenance contracts; it comes within the framework of a comprehensive strategy adopted by the Ministry to align with the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in improving quality of life and enhancing public services. The new contracts are based on updated terms and technical specifications, aiming to shift from traditional maintenance methods to preventative and smart maintenance.

These criteria are of paramount importance in:

  • Enhancing energy efficiency: by improving air conditioning and lighting systems to reduce electricity waste.
  • Extending the lifespan of buildings: through proactive treatment of structural and electrical faults.
  • Improving the health environment: by imposing strict hygiene standards that ensure a safe and healthy environment for worshippers.

Expected impact and direct monitoring

These projects are expected to bring about a tangible improvement in the level of services provided at the targeted mosques, positively impacting the comfort and tranquility of worshippers. This initiative is being overseen directly by His Excellency Minister Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, who consistently emphasizes the need for strict adherence to contract terms and holding those responsible for any shortcomings accountable, to ensure that mosques are maintained in the most dignified manner befitting their sanctity.

These huge budgets reflect the great care that the wise leadership gives to mosques, where all material and human capabilities are harnessed to serve them, which enhances the Kingdom’s leading position in serving Islam and Muslims and caring for holy sites and places of worship.
