In a historic move reflecting the accelerated pace of preparations for Asia's premier football event, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Local Organising Committee for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup announced this morning the official match schedule and the stadiums that will host the tournament in Saudi Arabia. This announcement, coming approximately 10 months before the start of the tournament, provides a clear roadmap for both the participating teams and their fans.

Details of the stadiums and host cities

The tournament is scheduled to take place between January 7 and February 5, 2027, across three major cities: Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Khobar. Eight world-class stadiums have been selected to host this major event

  • Riyadh: The capital will host the opening and closing ceremonies, with King Fahd Sports City Stadium (capacity 72,000) hosting the two most important matches, in addition to other matches in various rounds. Other stadiums also actively participate, including King Saud University Stadium , Kingdom Arena , Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University Stadium , and Al-Shabab Club Stadium , reflecting the capital's impressive sporting infrastructure.
  • Jeddah: The bride hosts important matches in the “Al-Inma” Stadium (King Abdullah Sports City) , which can accommodate 60,000 spectators and is the second largest stadium in the tournament, in addition to the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Sports City Stadium .
  • Al-Khobar: The city will witness the debut of the new Al-Khobar Stadium , an architectural masterpiece with a capacity of 45,000 spectators, which will host crucial matches up to the semi-finals.

The importance of the event and the historical context

Saudi Arabia's hosting of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup holds exceptional significance, as it marks the first time the Kingdom will host the Asian finals, despite its rich history in the tournament. The Saudi national team (the Green Falcons) boasts a golden record, having won the title three times (1984, 1988, 1996), and hosting the tournament on home soil and in front of its fans represents a historic opportunity to pursue a fourth title.

This hosting comes as an integral part of the objectives of "Saudi Vision 2030," which places great importance on the sports sector, not only as a competitive activity but also as a significant economic and tourism driver. The tournament is expected to contribute to boosting sports tourism and attracting tens of thousands of fans from across the continent, further enhancing the Kingdom's position as a global destination for major events.

The tournament draw and continental anticipation

All eyes are now on the historic Al-Turaif district in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which will host the final draw ceremony for the tournament on the evening of April 11, 2026. The path of the participating teams and the group stage matches will be determined during this ceremony.

It is worth noting that the qualifiers are still ongoing to decide the remaining four places, whose identity will become clear with the conclusion of the final round of qualifiers on March 31, thus completing the list of teams competing for the Asian throne in an edition expected to be the best in terms of organization and public attendance in the history of the competition.
