AFC Champions League Elite Draw: Potential clash between Al Hilal and Al Ahli

Introduction: The continent's eyes are on Jeddah

Asian football fans are turning their attention to Saudi Arabia, specifically to the AFC Champions League Finals – Jeddah 2026, which promises to be an exceptional and historic edition by all accounts. This comes after the completion of the knockout stage draw on Wednesday at the Asian Football Confederation headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which resulted in some highly competitive and exciting matchups.

Historical context and new championship system

This edition, under the new name “AFC Champions League Elite,” marks a pivotal era in the history of Asian club competitions, aiming to elevate competitiveness and increase marketing returns for participating clubs. The finals are scheduled to take place in an innovative centralized format from April 16 to 25, 2026. The quarter-finals will feature intense, direct clashes between East and West Asian clubs, with all seven matches in the knockout stages being single-leg knockout ties, further heightening the excitement and anticipation. These stages will be preceded by the Round of 16 matches for the West Asian zone, also played as single-leg ties, in Jeddah on April 13 and 14.

Quarter-final matches: major challenges

The draw produced some heavyweight clashes; the winner of the Arab derby between Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and Qatar's Al-Sadd will face Japan's Vissel Kobe. Al-Hilal, the record holders and most successful club in Asian competitions, topped the West Zone group standings, while Al-Sadd finished eighth, and Vissel Kobe finished second in the East Zone.

In the second path, the winner of the match between Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli and Qatar's Al-Duhail will face Malaysia's Johor Darul Ta'zim. Al-Ahli, seeking to prove its continental credentials, finished second in the West Zone of the league, while Al-Duhail finished seventh and Johor sixth in the East Zone.

In the remaining matches, Japan's Machida Zelvia (the East Zone leader) will face the winner of the match between Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad and the UAE's Al-Wahda. Thailand's Buriram United will play the winner of the match between Iran's Tractor and the UAE's Shabab Al-Ahli.

A potential clash: Local revenge with a continental flavor

One of the most notable outcomes of the draw is the strong possibility of an all-Saudi "Clásico" in the semi-finals. Should both Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli successfully navigate their quarter-final hurdles, they will face off to determine the first finalist. This potential clash is not merely a battle for a place in the final; it carries a sense of revenge and a long-standing rivalry that extends from domestic Saudi competitions to the continental stage, guaranteeing unprecedented fan and media attention both regionally and internationally.

Decision dates and the grand prize

The quarter-finals kick off on April 16 with the first match, followed by two matches on April 17, and concluding with a fourth match on April 18. The semi-finals will be held on April 20 and 21. This massive sporting event will culminate on April 25 with the highly anticipated final match at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (The Shining Jewel) in Jeddah. The champion will not only lift the most prestigious continental trophy but will also receive a record-breaking prize of no less than US$12 million, reflecting the significant development and investment in Asian football.
