Enhancing the vegetation cover at Miqat Yalamlam to serve the pilgrims

In a strategic move aimed at achieving sustainable environmental development, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate implemented a pioneering environmental initiative to plant trees at the Yalamlam Miqat. This initiative included planting more than 1,500 diverse saplings, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance vegetation cover and improve the environmental and urban landscape in the region, positively impacting the quality of life.

This unique initiative is part of a comprehensive package of early preparations and integrated environmental services provided to pilgrims during the 1447 AH Hajj season. This step aims to actively contribute to providing a healthier and more suitable environment and to raise the quality of services supporting the pilgrims. It also seeks to enhance environmental sustainability in vital locations that witness high density of visitors and pilgrims, thus providing them with a comfortable and shaded atmosphere that helps them perform their rituals with peace and ease.

The historical context and religious significance of the Yalamlam Miqat

The Miqat of Yalamlam is one of the five designated locations established by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for those intending to perform Hajj or Umrah. Located in the Al-Lith Governorate of the Makkah Region, it is the designated Miqat for the people of Yemen and all pilgrims passing through it from southern Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries. Given its immense historical and religious significance, developing its infrastructure and environment is a national and Islamic duty, as it represents the spiritual starting point for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually on their journey to the Holy Land.

Environmental and local impact of afforestation initiatives

For his part, the Director of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture office in Al-Lith Governorate, Engineer Yahya bin Abdulrahman Al-Mahabi, affirmed that these intensive efforts are an extension of the effective and fruitful partnerships with various governmental and private sectors. He explained that these partnerships enhance the success of environmental and developmental initiatives and support the objectives of preserving the environment and developing vegetation cover. Locally, planting these trees contributes to purifying the air, reducing temperatures, and mitigating sand encroachment and dust storms, in addition to providing green spaces that are pleasing to the eye and offer shade for travelers and pilgrims.

National and international dimensions: Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative

At the national and regional levels, this initiative aligns closely with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the Guests of God Service Program, which aims to transform the Hajj and Umrah experience. These efforts also complement the Saudi Green Initiative launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, which aims to plant 10 billion trees across the Kingdom to combat desertification and reduce carbon emissions. Internationally, these steps reflect Saudi Arabia's unwavering commitment to addressing climate change and providing a global model for managing massive crowds within a sustainable and environmentally friendly environment, thus underscoring the Kingdom's leadership in integrating urban development with the preservation of natural resources.
