18 people, including children, killed in a horrific accident in eastern Afghanistan

A tragic accident claims the lives of 18 people

Eighteen people, including ten children and five women, were killed in a tragic traffic accident on Saturday in eastern Afghanistan when a truck carrying them overturned. Local authorities reported that 29 others sustained injuries of varying severity and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The horrific accident occurred on the main highway connecting Jalalabad, the capital of Laghman province, with Kabul, a vital artery that experiences heavy traffic.

Abdul Malik Niazi, spokesman for Laghman province, told AFP that "the truck was carrying Afghan families returning from Pakistan, where they had been living as refugees." He added that "the accident killed 18 people—10 children, five women, and three men—while 29 injured were taken to the hospital." Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid expressed his deep sorrow over the incident via the X platform, emphasizing that the tragedy occurred on the last day of Eid al-Adha.

Context of forced return and infrastructure deterioration

This incident comes within a broader context of the return of hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees from Pakistan. In recent months, Islamabad has tightened its policies toward undocumented Afghan migrants and refugees, prompting large numbers to return home. These journeys are often undertaken in perilous conditions, with families using overcrowded cargo trucks for long-distance travel due to their affordability, increasing the likelihood of fatal accidents.

Road accidents are common and tragic in Afghanistan, largely due to the deplorable state of the road infrastructure, ravaged by decades of war and armed conflict. Roads are often poorly paved, narrow, and lack regular maintenance and basic safety measures. Added to this are reckless driving, poor vehicle condition, and disregard for traffic laws, making Afghan roads among the most dangerous in the world.

Importance and expected impact

This incident once again highlights the complex humanitarian crisis facing Afghanistan. On the one hand, it reveals the grave dangers faced by returnees, and on the other, it exposes the weakness of the infrastructure and the state's inability to provide even the most basic safety standards for its citizens. Locally, the incident places additional strain on the already overburdened health system in Laghman province and surrounding areas. Regionally and internationally, it reminds the international community of the need to support Afghanistan not only in the humanitarian and relief sectors, but also in the reconstruction of vital infrastructure to improve living conditions and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future.
