The Governor of Al-Ahsa honors the winners of the Environmental Sustainability Award

In a move reflecting the growing interest in environmental and sustainability issues in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr, Governor of Al-Ahsa, sponsored the closing ceremony of the first Al-Ahsa Environmental Sustainability Award. The ceremony, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture's office in the governorate, was held in the main hall at King Faisal University and witnessed a significant attendance of officials and representatives from the governmental, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as educational institutions, underscoring the broad societal importance of this initiative.

National context and future vision

This award comes within the context of the comprehensive national transformation led by the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which places environmental sustainability and improved quality of life among its top priorities. Such local initiatives complement major national strategies like the Saudi Green Initiative, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, plant billions of trees, and combat desertification. Launching a specialized award in Al-Ahsa, the world’s largest palm oasis and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is particularly significant, linking the preservation of the region’s rich natural heritage with the requirements of sustainable future development.

The importance of the award and its expected impact

The award aims to encourage innovation and motivate all segments of society to adopt environmentally friendly practices. During the ceremony, an inspiring success story was presented: a student initiative that transformed from a simple idea into a sustainable, applied project, contributing to spreading a culture of recycling and responsible consumption within the educational environment. This model exemplifies the award's positive impact in turning promising ideas into tangible realities. The ceremony also honored the winners of the "Green Home" award, which encourages families to implement sustainability standards in their homes through the optimal use of resources and energy, thus contributing to building a society aware of its environmental responsibilities.

Strengthening partnerships and supporting innovation

The ceremony witnessed the signing of several agreements between the Ministry of Environment's office and governmental, private, and non-profit entities, aimed at strengthening institutional partnerships and expanding the scope of environmental initiatives in the governorate. In his address, His Highness the Governor of Al-Ahsa emphasized that the support the environmental sector receives is an extension of the wise leadership's commitment, praising the two awards which reflect the community's awareness and positive engagement with environmental issues. For his part, Dr. Atiyah Al-Thaqafi, Director of the Ministry's branch in Al-Ahsa, explained that the first cycle of the awards saw widespread community participation, exceeding 300 entries, with total prize money exceeding 200,000 riyals. These prizes were awarded to diverse categories, including students, teachers, environmental activists, and owners of green homes. At the conclusion of the ceremony, His Highness honored the winners and partners in success, stressing the importance of concerted efforts to achieve a more sustainable future for generations to come and to solidify Al-Ahsa's position as a leading model in environmental development.
