
Thunderstorms in Al-Baha: Warnings of flash floods and weather fluctuations
The Al-Baha region and large parts of its governorates witnessed moderate to light rainfall today, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail in some areas. The rain covered Al-Baha city and its suburbs, as well as Bani Hassan governorate and its administrative centers, and several of the region's renowned natural parks. This resulted in the flow of some valleys and streams, saturating the land and creating a picturesque natural scene that revitalized the landscape.
This rainfall is part of a typical climatic pattern experienced by the southwestern highlands of Saudi Arabia during the spring and summer months. The Al-Baha region, situated within the Sarawat Mountains, is characterized by its rugged terrain, which contributes to the frequent formation of cumulonimbus clouds. These seasonal rains are vital to the region, replenishing groundwater, filling dams, and supporting the agricultural sector, on which a large portion of the local population depends. Al-Baha is renowned for its seasonal fruits and honey.
In this context, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) issued advanced warnings for the region, cautioning against continued weather fluctuations. The center indicated in its reports that rainfall could be heavy at times, accompanied by strong winds reaching high speeds, potentially leading to near-zero visibility, hail, and flash floods. The Civil Defense Directorate in the region urged citizens and residents to exercise extreme caution, stay away from valleys and floodplains, avoid low-lying areas, and follow official warnings issued by the relevant authorities to ensure their safety.
Locally, these rains enhance Al-Baha's appeal as a major domestic tourist destination, especially with the moderate temperatures offering visitors respite from the summer heat in most other parts of the Kingdom. However, the negative impacts may outweigh the benefits, as flash floods pose a threat to lives, property, and infrastructure, necessitating constant readiness from emergency teams and service providers to address any emergencies that may arise from this weather phenomenon. These climatic events also highlight the importance of studying climate change and its impact on the ecosystems and water resources of the Arabian Peninsula.
