The timing of the visit and its political significance

The visit of the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is of paramount importance given the sensitive time Sudan has been going through since the outbreak of the internal conflict in mid-April 2023. This visit comes within the framework of the ongoing consultation between the leaderships of the two countries to enhance ways of joint cooperation, and to emphasize the depth of the fraternal relations that bind the two brotherly peoples.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plays a pivotal and leading role in the Sudanese file, as Riyadh, in cooperation with the United States of America, led mediation efforts through the “Jeddah Platform”, which hosted several rounds of negotiations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, with the aim of reaching a ceasefire and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected.

Regional and international dimensions

Regionally, Sudan’s stability is viewed as integral to the security of the Red Sea and Horn of Africa region, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s vision for enhancing security and stability in the region. Riyadh consistently supports the preservation of Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts within international forums to garner the necessary support for a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese crisis.

The Kingdom's humanitarian role

Relations between the two countries are not limited to the political sphere, but extend to the humanitarian and relief sectors. The Kingdom, through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, has established air and sea bridges to transport medical, food, and shelter aid to the brotherly Sudanese people, reflecting the Kingdom's unwavering commitment to standing by Sudan in its current crisis.

The talks during this visit are expected to address ways to advance the political process and discuss security and economic challenges, in a manner that serves the interests of both countries and enhances the chances of peace and stability in the region.
