Al-Burhan departs Riyadh after an official visit to Saudi Arabia

His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of Sudan, and his accompanying delegation, departed Riyadh today following an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during which he held important talks. This departure concludes the visit's agenda, which aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries.

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Riyadh Region, was at the forefront of those bidding farewell to His Excellency at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, reflecting the deep fraternal ties between the two leaderships. Also participating in the farewell ceremony were the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to the Republic of Sudan, Ali bin Hassan Jaafar, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to the Kingdom, Dafallah Al-Haj Ali Othman, the Undersecretary of Royal Protocol, Fahd Al-Sahil, and a number of other officials.

Context of the visit and its regional significance

The visits of Sudanese officials to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at this time are of exceptional importance, given the delicate circumstances that Sudan has been going through since the outbreak of the conflict in mid-April 2023. Riyadh plays a pivotal and strategic role in the Sudanese file, as the Kingdom, in cooperation with the United States of America, led mediation efforts through the "Jeddah Platform", with the aim of reaching a ceasefire and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected, which makes continuous communication between the Sudanese leadership and officials in the Kingdom vital for the future of stability in Sudan.

Historical relations and humanitarian role

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Sudan share deep-rooted historical ties that transcend traditional diplomatic frameworks, encompassing profound social, cultural, and economic bonds. The Kingdom is a major supporter of Sudan's stability and security, viewing Sudan's security as an integral part of the security of the Red Sea region and Arab national security. On the humanitarian front, the Kingdom has been unwavering in its provision of relief aid through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, and in establishing air and sea bridges to alleviate the suffering of the brotherly Sudanese people due to the current situation.

This visit and the diplomatic moves that follow indicate the continued joint coordination between the two countries to confront current challenges, and to search for sustainable political solutions that guarantee Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and support its legitimate institutions in facing internal and external challenges.
