The Gulf in the Asian Men's Club Handball Championship: A title challenge

The Saudi Arabian handball team, Al-Khaleej, representing the Kingdom, begins its ambitious campaign in Asian Men's Club League Handball Championship , hosted by Kuwait until June 17. The "Gripping Pearl" team enters the competition aiming to reclaim the continental title it lost in the previous edition and qualify for the IHF Men's Super Globe, the world club championship, to be held in Egypt.

Al Khaleej's campaign kicks off with a heavyweight clash on Saturday evening, as they face defending champions Sharjah of the UAE in what is considered an early final and a chance for revenge. Al Khaleej will be looking to make a perfect start, sending a strong message to all their rivals and confirming their readiness to compete for the title, while also seeking redemption after their defeat to the Emirati team in last year's final.

High ambitions after a historic treble

Al-Khaleej enters the continental championship with high morale and great confidence after an exceptional domestic season by all accounts. The team achieved a historic feat by winning the domestic treble (league, Elite Cup, and Cup), which gives them a tremendous morale boost and places them among the top contenders for the Asian title. This domestic success did not come about by chance, but was the result of meticulous planning, technical and administrative stability, and a cohesive group of local and foreign professional players.

Tough challenges in the Asian Men's Club Handball Championship

The Asian Men's Club League Handball Championship is the oldest and strongest club tournament on the continent, bringing together the champions of Asia's domestic leagues. This year's edition is being held in a single round-robin format, featuring seven of the region's strongest clubs, making every match a final. In addition to Al Khaleej and Sharjah, the tournament includes established teams such as Kuwait SC and Burgan (the host club), Al Najma of Bahrain, and Al Arabi and Al Duhail of Qatar. This strong field guarantees fierce competition and high-level play from day one, making Al Khaleej's quest to reclaim the title a challenging one.

Global Glory Gateway

The tournament's significance extends beyond simply winning the continental title; it also serves as the sole gateway for Asian clubs to participate in the IHF Super Globe, the world club championship. This adds another dimension to the competition, as all participating teams aspire to represent Asia on the global stage and face the champions of other continents, giving the tournament exceptional momentum and importance. Al-Khaleej, boasting a distinguished record in the tournament with its 2022 title win and runner-up finish in 2023, is fully aware of the responsibility placed upon it to achieve this dual objective.

Star-studded battalion

To support its ambitious goals, Al-Khaleej Club bolstered its squad with high-profile signings of foreign professionals, acquiring Croatian goalkeeper Kristian, Austrian right-back Bozovic Janko, and Ukrainian left-back Dmytro Horiyi. This trio joins Bahraini stars Hussain Al-Sayyad and Mohammed Habib, who played pivotal roles in securing the domestic treble, forming a formidable force alongside the team's local talents, capable of challenging any opponent on the continent.
