Al Noor Specialized Hospital succeeds in saving the life of an Eritrean pilgrim

In a medical achievement reflecting the efficiency of the healthcare system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the Hajj season, the Heart Center at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, part of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully saved the life of an Eritrean pilgrim in his sixties. This crucial intervention came after the pilgrim suffered a severe heart attack that led to complete cardiac arrest for six minutes, before the medical team was able to resuscitate him and perform an emergency cardiac catheterization, which was completely successful.

Case details and urgent medical intervention

Dr. Ahmed Al-Hazmi, Consultant and Head of the Heart Center at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, explained that the patient arrived at the emergency department suffering from severe and sharp chest pain. Immediately, thorough medical examinations revealed an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) resulting from a complete blockage of the left main coronary artery supplying the heart. This necessitated an immediate decision to perform an emergency cardiac catheterization to open the artery and save the patient's life.

Dr. Al-Hazmi added that in a critical moment, just before the patient was to be transferred to the catheterization lab, he suffered a sudden and complete cardiac arrest. This dangerous development necessitated immediate intervention by the medical team, who performed intensive cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for six minutes. Thanks to God and the team's high level of preparedness, the patient's heart responded and his circulation stabilized. He was immediately transferred to the lab to utilize the latest medical techniques to open the blockage and widen the artery with a balloon, along with the insertion of a therapeutic stent in a procedure that lasted only 43 minutes under close monitoring.

The historical context of the Kingdom's efforts in providing healthcare for pilgrims

This medical achievement is not merely an exceptional event, but rather an extension of a long and distinguished history of tremendous efforts by the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to serve the pilgrims. For decades, the Kingdom has placed the health and safety of pilgrims at the forefront of its priorities, providing a comprehensive and free healthcare system that includes advanced hospitals, primary care centers, and a fleet of ambulances equipped with the latest technology. The Saudi Ministry of Health mobilizes thousands of specialized medical personnel annually to handle emergencies, particularly heart conditions and heat exhaustion, making the Kingdom's experience in crowd management and field healthcare a model studied globally.

The importance of the event and its impact at the local and international levels

At the local and regional level, this success highlights the effectiveness of the “urgent pathway for specialized cardiac care”, which is one of the vital pathways within the modern Saudi healthcare model stemming from the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. This pathway aims to reduce the time between the diagnosis of strokes and therapeutic intervention, thereby reducing mortality rates and serious complications.

On an international level, saving the life of a pilgrim after his heart stopped reinforces the confidence of the Islamic and international community in the Saudi healthcare system's ability to handle the most complex medical cases under the immense pressure of the Hajj season. The head of the Heart Center affirms that this achievement reflects the center's specialized leadership, which stems from the generous and unlimited support of the wise leadership—may God protect them—and their continuous directives to dedicate all resources to providing the best diagnostic and treatment services to citizens, residents, and pilgrims, enabling them to perform their rituals in good health and safety.
