Trump: Extracting Iranian uranium is difficult after the destruction of its nuclear sites
Trump's statements regarding the Iranian nuclear program
Former US President Donald Trump asserted that extracting uranium from Iran would be a lengthy and difficult process, following what he described as the US strikes on Tehran's nuclear sites during his presidency. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump indicated that Operation Midnight Hammer, the name he gave to those strikes, resulted in the complete destruction of what he termed "nuclear dust" sites in Iran, thus complicating their efforts to extract it.
Trump frequently uses the term “nuclear dust” to refer to Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, which Washington and its allies accuse Tehran of hoarding to develop nuclear weapons—a claim Iran consistently denies, maintaining that its nuclear program is peaceful. Trump added that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium would eventually be handed over to the United States, despite the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s denial of any such plans.
The historical context of nuclear tensions
Trump's remarks come amid long-standing tensions between the United States and Iran over its nuclear program. In 2015, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, was reached between Iran and the P5+1 group, which includes the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany. Under this agreement, Iran agreed to significantly restrict its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
However, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, arguing that it did not adequately address Iran’s ballistic missile program and its regional role. Following the withdrawal, Washington reimposed harsh economic sanctions as part of its “maximum pressure” campaign, aiming to force Tehran to negotiate a new, more comprehensive agreement. In response, Iran began gradually reducing its compliance with the agreement and increased its uranium enrichment levels and stockpiles.
Importance and potential impacts
Trump's statements take on particular significance given his leading position in the upcoming US presidential election. These statements reflect his continued hardline approach toward Iran, which combines military threats and economic pressure while leaving the door open for what he considers a "good deal.".
Regionally, these tensions are causing concern among neighboring countries, particularly in the Arabian Gulf and Israel, which views Iran’s nuclear program as an existential threat. Internationally, the US withdrawal from the nuclear agreement has strained relations between Washington and its European allies, who have strived to preserve the deal. The ongoing crisis also casts a shadow over global nuclear nonproliferation efforts and increases the risk of military conflict in the Middle East, a region vital to global energy supplies.
