Anger at Al-Wahda Saudi Club after Al-Anwar's five-goal defeat in the Yellow League
Fans shocked after a crushing defeat in the Yellow League
The heavy defeat suffered by Al-Wahda FC against Al-Anwar, by a score of 5-1, in the 28th round of the Saudi First Division League, sparked outrage among Al-Wahda fans. The angry supporters demanded that the club's management take decisive action, including dismissing all current players, holding them responsible for the string of losses that have shattered the "Knights of Mecca's" hopes of a swift return to the Saudi Professional League.
Historical context: Al Wahda Club's long history and current challenges
Al-Wahda Club, founded in Mecca, is one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in the history of Saudi football. For decades, it has been a primary source of players for the national teams, producing some of the brightest stars. However, in recent years, the club has suffered from a clear inconsistency in performance, fluctuating between the top division and the first division. This current crisis comes at a time when Saudi sports are experiencing a historic boom and unprecedented development within the framework of Vision 2030, placing added pressure on popular and historically significant clubs like Al-Wahda to keep pace with this development and return to their rightful place among the elite, both financially and technically.
The fans exonerate the management and demand a team overhaul
In response, several club supporters and prominent figures, including Musaed Al-Salmi, Ahmed Al-Attas, Talal Abu Laban, Fahd Al-Qurashi, Faisal Al-Hazmi, and Salim Al-Lahibi, spoke with one voice, saying: “We do not hold the current club administration responsible for the technical disasters, defeats, and shameful performances the team has displayed in the Yellow League matches. The current administration did not sign these players; these players have proven their technical inadequacy, and their natural place is to play for second and third division clubs, not to represent a team with a broad fan base and a great history like Al-Wahda.”.
The fans appealed to the Ministry of Sports to intervene and extend the current administration's mandate, headed by Hatem Khimi, for another season. They argued that holding the general assembly at the end of the current season could result in the appointment of an inexperienced administration, potentially plunging the club back into decline. They emphasized that the club's best interests require Khimi's continued leadership and financial support so he can build a new team comprised of high-caliber local and international professionals, while simultaneously removing the current players who have achieved the worst results and rankings in the club's history.
Rescue Plan: Strategic Survival and Debt Management
On the other hand, a senior official in the current administration of Al Wahda Club revealed a different strategic vision for the crisis. The official explained that the administration had already succeeded in achieving its primary objective, which was to save the team from relegation to the second division. More importantly, the administration succeeded in lifting the ban on registering new players and managed to pay off more than 60% of the accumulated debts that had threatened the club's existence and future.
The source highlighted a crucial point concerning the team's future, emphasizing that it is not in Al Wahda's best interest to be promoted to the Roshan Professional League this season with the current squad and under the present financial circumstances. He explained that promotion now would mean a swift relegation the following season, as the substantial financial returns the club would receive from playing in the Roshan League would be entirely consumed in paying off the remaining accumulated debts, leaving insufficient funds for securing strong signings to ensure survival and competitiveness.
The source concluded that the best strategic option is for the team to remain in the Yellow Division for now, and to work on addressing the financial situation and debts gradually and thoughtfully, while simultaneously making a near-complete overhaul of the squad. Everyone understands that the team desperately needs to strengthen all positions with exceptional players capable of restoring its prestige and performing at a level befitting the name and history of Al-Wahda Saudi Club.
