A person was apprehended for violating camping regulations in the Imam Faisal bin Turki Royal Reserve
The Special Forces for Environmental Security announced the arrest of a citizen for violating environmental regulations by camping without a permit in the Imam Faisal bin Turki Royal Reserve. The forces confirmed that legal procedures were applied to the violator, noting that this action is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the law and protect the Kingdom's natural resources.
General context: Environmental protection as a national priority
This measure is not an isolated event, but rather part of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at preserving and enhancing the sustainability of the environment, a key pillar of Saudi Vision 2030. In 2018, a royal decree established the Royal Reserves Council and designated several nature reserves, including the Imam Faisal bin Turki Reserve, with the goal of reintroducing wildlife, developing vegetation cover, and restoring the lost ecological balance. The Special Forces for Environmental Security were established in 2019 as the executive arm of the Ministry of Interior to enforce environmental regulations, monitor activities within these reserves, and combat harmful practices such as poaching, logging, unregulated grazing, and unauthorized camping.
The importance of the Imam Faisal bin Turki Royal Reserve
The Imam Faisal bin Turki Royal Reserve spans a vast area exceeding 30,000 square kilometers in the Asir region, distinguished by its unique biodiversity and stunning mountainous terrain. The reserve is home to several endangered species, such as the Arabian leopard and the Nubian ibex, and boasts a rich and diverse flora. Protecting this area not only preserves biodiversity but also contributes to fostering sustainable ecotourism, a promising sector that supports the local economy and creates new job opportunities, while ensuring the preservation of these natural treasures for future generations.
Impact and deterrent penalties
The forces clarified that the penalty for camping in protected areas or national parks without a permit is a fine of up to 3,000 Saudi Riyals. These penalties aim to deter violators and raise public awareness of the importance of adhering to environmental regulations. Firm enforcement of the law sends a clear message that environmental degradation is no longer acceptable and encourages the adoption of a culture of social responsibility towards natural resources. The Special Forces for Environmental Security urged citizens and residents to immediately report any violations against the environment or wildlife by calling the designated numbers: 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, Eastern Province, and Madinah regions, and 999 and 996 in the rest of the Kingdom, assuring them of the confidentiality of their identities.
