A drug dealer was arrested in Asir with 39 kg of the narcotic plant khat
Ongoing security efforts: A khat drug dealer apprehended in Asir
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to protect society from the scourge of drugs, security patrols in the Asir region have dealt another blow to smugglers and traffickers of narcotics. Vigilant security measures resulted in the arrest of a citizen involved in an attempt to distribute a large quantity of khat, a narcotic plant, in Al-Farsha Governorate. The suspect was immediately detained, and all necessary legal procedures were initiated against him, in preparation for referring him to the appropriate authorities to complete the investigations and apply deterrent penalties.
The geographical and historical context of khat smuggling
The narcotic plant khat is cultivated and consumed primarily in parts of the Horn of Africa and southern Arabia. This plant contains chemical stimulants, most notably cathinone, which is classified internationally and locally as a prohibited narcotic due to its severe negative effects on the nervous system and the mental and physical health of the user. The Asir region, with its complex mountainous terrain and border location, is considered one of the front lines where Saudi security forces exert considerable effort to combat smuggling attempts that exploit the rugged landscape to bring these drugs into the Kingdom.
The importance of the event and its local and regional impact
This successful security operation comes within the framework of the Kingdom's comprehensive national anti-drug campaign, "On the Lookout." Domestically, these preemptive strikes contribute to protecting Saudi youth from falling into the trap of addiction, which positively impacts the reduction of drug-related crime rates, preserves family and social stability, and protects the national economy from depletion. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's strict enforcement of regulations and border control make it a formidable barrier against transnational organized crime gangs, thus enhancing the security and stability of the entire region and reaffirming Saudi Arabia's commitment to international agreements combating the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The role of citizens and residents: reporting violations
The security authorities in the Kingdom believe that the citizen is the first line of defense. Therefore, the Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate of Narcotics Control urge all citizens and residents to take the initiative and report any information they may have regarding any suspicious activities related to drug smuggling or trafficking. Reports can be submitted easily and securely by calling 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, Eastern Province, and Madinah regions. In the rest of the Kingdom, the number 999 can be called. The General Directorate of Narcotics Control has also designated the number 995 for receiving direct reports, in addition to the option of contacting them via email at 995@gdnc.gov.sa. The relevant authorities emphasize that all reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality to protect the informants, ensure their safety, and encourage their active participation in maintaining the security of the nation.
