Guide me: A new technology to improve the efficiency of Hajj buses in Mecca

In a move aimed at enhancing the efficiency of services provided to pilgrims, the Bus Guidance Center for International Pilgrims in Makkah launched the “Guide Me” digital platform, a cutting-edge technological solution for real-time monitoring and guidance of pilgrim buses. This initiative is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to leverage the latest technologies to ensure a safe, organized, and convenient Hajj experience for millions of Muslims arriving from around the world.

The “Arshdni” platform serves as an integrated control and monitoring center, providing field guides and operations teams with immediate access to trip data and highly accurate bus tracking. The center's general manager, Abdullah Sindi, explained that the platform integrates directly with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's “Nusk Masar” system, offering a comprehensive and unified view of transportation operations and contributing to the efficient and rapid delivery of pilgrims to their accommodations.

Historical background and ongoing efforts to serve pilgrims

Managing transportation during the Hajj season is one of the world's greatest logistical challenges. Over the decades, the Kingdom has invested heavily in developing the infrastructure of Mecca and the Holy Sites, from widening roads and constructing bridges and tunnels to introducing the Al-Mashaaer Metro. However, bus transportation remains the backbone of moving millions of pilgrims between the various rituals. Historically, reliance on manual guidance and limited communication has sometimes led to delays or even buses getting lost in the intense crowds. This has created a critical need for smart solutions that utilize tracking and monitoring technologies to improve guidance accuracy and minimize human error.

The importance and expected impact of the “Guide Me” platform

The significance of the “Arshdni” platform lies in its ability to transform bus management from a traditional system to a smart, digital one. Locally, the platform contributes to reducing traffic congestion, improving emergency response times, and more efficiently deploying guides and field teams based on actual needs. Internationally, the success of these technologies enhances the Kingdom’s position as a leader in managing large crowds and gatherings, offering a model that can be applied to other global events. Furthermore, providing a smooth and comfortable transportation experience positively impacts the perception of Hajj among Muslims worldwide and underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to the comfort of pilgrims.

In line with Saudi Vision 2030

This technological development aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes digital transformation and enhancing the quality of services provided to citizens and visitors. The platform, overseen by the Coordinating Council for Hospitality Companies and Service Providers for Pilgrims from Abroad and the General Syndicate of Cars, and operating under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, aims to achieve greater integration among the various entities involved in the Hajj system. This ensures the provision of highly reliable services befitting the sanctity of the pilgrims' spiritual journey from their arrival until their safe departure.
