Egypt stresses the need for rapid reconstruction of Gaza to ensure regional stability

The Arab Republic of Egypt reiterated its firm stance on the urgent need for the international community to take immediate and effective action to begin the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, stressing that any delay in this step exacerbates the catastrophic humanitarian suffering endured by the Strip's residents. This unwavering Egyptian position comes within the framework of Cairo's ongoing diplomatic efforts to halt the escalation of violence and ensure its sustainability, paving the way for an international workshop aimed at revitalizing the devastated infrastructure.

General context and historical Egyptian role

This stance is not new to Egyptian foreign policy; Cairo has long played the role of an impartial mediator and a key player in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Historically, Egypt has been at the forefront of calling for donor conferences after each escalation, as was the case in 2009, 2014, and 2021. Egypt views the Gaza Strip not only as a geographical neighbor but also as a strategic depth and an integral part of Arab national security, making stability there a top priority for Egyptian decision-makers.

The scale of the destruction and the urgent need for reconstruction

The Egyptian appeal is based on the harrowing realities on the ground, where Gaza's infrastructure has suffered widespread destruction, including electricity, water, and sanitation networks, as well as thousands of housing units and medical and educational facilities. Cairo recognizes that food and medical aid, while crucial, is insufficient on its own to guarantee a dignified life for Palestinians. It must be accompanied by a comprehensive plan to clear the rubble and rebuild what the war destroyed, providing shelter and essential services to millions of displaced people.

The political and regional dimensions of the reconstruction process

From a geopolitical perspective, Egypt views reconstruction not merely as an engineering or financial undertaking, but as a fundamental pillar for consolidating the ceasefire and preventing renewed clashes. The lack of economic and social prospects for the Gaza Strip's residents creates a fertile ground for renewed tension. Therefore, Egyptian diplomacy is working to garner international and regional support for establishing a transparent and effective mechanism that ensures donor funds reach their intended recipients and contributes to revitalizing the local economy in Gaza, which will positively impact regional stability across the entire Middle East.

Invitation to international partners

In concluding its efforts, Egypt sends a clear message to key international players, the United Nations, and the World Bank: the cost of reconstruction today, however high, remains far less than the cost of continued conflict and chaos. Cairo affirms its full readiness to provide all necessary logistical and technical support through the Rafah crossing and via its highly experienced national companies to contribute to this massive humanitarian and development effort.
