Hadhramaut courts resume work after repairing the damage caused by vandalism

The judicial authorities in Hadramawt Governorate, eastern Yemen, announced the resumption of work in a number of courts and judicial complexes that had stopped providing services to citizens during the past period, following the completion of the necessary maintenance and restoration work to address the damage they suffered as a result of acts of sabotage and events that the country witnessed.
Rehabilitation of the judiciary's infrastructure
This important step comes after intensive efforts by the local authorities in the governorate, in coordination with the Ministry of Justice, focusing on rehabilitating damaged buildings and equipping them to ensure the smooth functioning of the judicial system. The maintenance work included repairing structural damage and providing office and technical equipment that had been looted or destroyed during previous periods of instability, reflecting a genuine commitment to normalizing public life and reactivating state institutions.
General context and challenges of the current phase
The judicial system in Yemen in general, and in some districts of Hadramawt in particular, has suffered from numerous challenges in recent years as a result of the ongoing conflict in the country since 2015. The security breakdown in previous periods led to many government headquarters, including courts, being subjected to acts of sabotage and looting, which caused the disruption of the adjudication of cases and the accumulation of files, and cast a heavy shadow on the rights and interests of citizens.
The importance of the return of courts to social stability
The resumption of court operations in Hadramawt is of paramount importance, extending far beyond simply opening the doors of a government building. It represents a fundamental pillar for establishing security and stability in the largest governorate in Yemen. Activating the judiciary necessarily entails:
- Speed of dispute resolution: Thousands of citizens are waiting for their pending cases to be decided, whether they are civil, commercial, or criminal.
- Protecting rights and property: An effective judiciary enhances the confidence of investors and citizens in the rule of law, which is reflected positively on economic activity.
- Strengthening the prestige of the state: The return of sovereign institutions to work is the strongest message of the state’s recovery and the extension of its influence.
Hadhramaut as a model of recovery
Hadhramaut Governorate stands as a significant example in the current Yemeni landscape, where local authorities are striving to keep the governorate free from armed conflict and focus on development and services. The full resumption of operations at judicial facilities is a positive indicator and a reassuring message, both domestically and internationally, that the governorate is steadily progressing towards institutional stability. This may encourage other liberated governorates to follow suit in rebuilding and reactivating their damaged state institutions.
