Saudi Arabia welcomes the prisoner exchange agreement in Yemen, reached in Muscat

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia expressed its strong support for the agreement signed today in Muscat, the capital of Oman, which stipulates the exchange of prisoners and detainees between the Yemeni parties. This step reflects the intensive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the humanitarian crisis in Yemen and promoting sustainable peace.
Details of the Saudi statement and mediation efforts
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement commending the pivotal role played by the Sultanate of Oman in hosting and sponsoring the negotiation rounds, praising the sincere efforts exerted during the period from December 9 to 23, 2025. The Ministry affirmed that the success of these negotiations reflects a genuine desire to overcome differences and prioritize humanitarian considerations.
The Kingdom also noted the commendable efforts made by the Office of the Special Envoy of the United Nations to Yemen and the International Committee of the Red Cross, who worked alongside the participating parties to ensure this positive outcome, which is a fundamental building block in the wall of trust between the Yemeni parties.
The importance of the prisoners' issue in the Yemeni crisis
The issue of prisoners and detainees occupies a special place in the context of the Yemeni conflict, as it is one of the most complex and sensitive humanitarian files. Previous prisoner exchanges have always offered glimmers of hope to the Yemeni people, as the return of detainees to their families helps alleviate the social and psychological tensions resulting from years of conflict. The achievement of this agreement in Muscat is not limited to the humanitarian aspect alone, but extends to providing a solid foundation upon which to build in other political and security matters.
The regional and international role and the future of peace
This agreement reaffirms the importance of regional diplomacy, particularly the role of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states in supporting stability in Yemen. Muscat's hosting of these talks and Riyadh's support for their outcomes highlight the integration of Gulf and international efforts to advance a political solution.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded its statement by reaffirming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s firm and supportive stance towards all efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in the Republic of Yemen, and fulfilling the aspirations of the brotherly Yemeni people for development and prosperity, stressing that dialogue is the only way to end the crisis and reach a comprehensive political solution.
