First Division League Results - Round 17: Abha leads, Al-Diriyah in pursuit

The curtain fell yesterday on the seventeenth round of the First Division Professional League, in a round that witnessed exciting twists that strengthened the leader’s position and ignited the competition in the warm and relegation zones, amidst a fierce tactical struggle between the clubs aspiring to ascend to the top league.

Abha stands alone, while Diriyah clings to hope

In the highlight of the round, Abha continued their strong performances, reaffirming their determination to quickly return to the top tier. The team secured a valuable and tactical victory against their guest, Al-Raed, with a score of 2-1. This win not only earned Abha three points but also brought their total to 42, widening the gap and putting pressure on their pursuers, while Al-Raed's tally remained at 23 points in ninth place.

On the other hand, Al-Diriyah did not stand idly by, securing a victory in the top match of the round after defeating their hosts, Al-Bukairiyah, by a single goal. This strategic win raised Al-Diriyah's points tally to 36, maintaining their second-place position and keeping their title hopes alive, while Al-Bukairiyah's points remained at 32, dropping them to fourth place.

The rivals faltered and the battle for the top four ensued

The round saw some direct rivals drop points, as Al-Oruba continued their run of poor results with a thrilling 2-2 draw against hosts Al-Anwar, leaving them in third place with 34 points. Meanwhile, Al-Ula squandered a golden opportunity to break into the top four, drawing 0-0 with Al-Zulfi and remaining in fifth place with 31 points.

Mixed results in the middle and bottom of the standings

In the remaining matches, Al-Jabalain secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Al-Wahda, climbing to sixth place with 30 points. Al-Faisaly also managed to return with three points from Al-Batin's stadium after a 2-1 win, further compounding Al-Batin's woes as they remain at the bottom of the table with only 4 points and no wins so far – a worrying sign for the team's future in the league.

The match between Jeddah and Al-Ta’ee ended in a goalless draw, while Al-Jandal achieved an important victory over Al-Arabi with a clean goal, and the match between Al-Jubail and Al-Adalah ended in a positive draw (2-2).

Numbers speak louder than words: Abha is the strongest in both attack and defense

Statistics reveal Abha's technical dominance, as they not only lead the points standings but also boast the strongest attack with 37 goals and the strongest defense, having conceded only 14 goals, reflecting a high level of tactical balance. Their player, Silla Sow, tops the scorers' list with 17 goals, followed by Gaëtan Laborde of Al-Diriyah with 14 goals.

The importance of the league and the competitiveness of promotion

The First Division is gaining increasing importance season after season, as it serves as the main gateway to the Saudi Professional League (Roshan League). The results of this round indicate that the battle for promotion will remain fierce until the very end, especially given the close points standings between the teams in second through fifth place, promising exciting and competitive matches in the coming rounds.
