Saudi Arabia weather today: A heat gap between Al-Qunfudhah and Tarif, and thunderstorms

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia observed an exceptional weather phenomenon today, reflecting the country's vast geographical diversity. A significant temperature gap, exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, was recorded between the warm coastal regions and the bitterly cold northern areas. This data coincides with the automated early warning system issuing a series of alerts regarding reduced horizontal visibility due to dense fog in the eastern and central regions, as well as forecasts of varying intensity thunderstorms over the western and southern highlands.

Details of the heat gap and climate variability

Digital data released by the Meteorological Authority revealed a striking temperature contrast. Maximum temperatures in the coastal province of Al-Qunfudhah reached 33 degrees Celsius, reflecting warm summer weather. Conversely, minimum temperatures plummeted in the northern regions, dropping to as low as 2 degrees Celsius in the provinces of Tarif and Al-Qurayyat, nearing freezing (0 degrees Celsius). This significant variation reflects the continental nature of the Kingdom, where the northern regions are affected by cold air masses from the north, while the western coastal areas remain warm thanks to the influence of the Red Sea.

Weather conditions in major cities and highlands

Weather reports indicate that relatively warm conditions prevail in Mecca and Jeddah, with maximum temperatures hovering around 31 degrees Celsius, making them popular destinations for those seeking warmth at this time of year. In stark contrast, cold winter weather reigns supreme in the mountainous regions, with the Asir region, particularly the Asir Mountains, recording temperatures of only around 4 degrees Celsius, necessitating the wearing of heavy winter clothing and the adoption of appropriate heating measures.

Warnings of fog and reduced visibility

In light of the weather phenomena accompanying this variation, the National Center for Meteorology warned of dense fog covering large areas of the Eastern Province, with its effects extending to vital parts of Riyadh, the Northern Borders region, Al-Jawf, and Tabuk. The report cautioned drivers and highway users of the danger of reduced horizontal visibility caused by this fog, noting that its impact intensifies and becomes more dangerous during the late night and early morning hours. This necessitates exercising caution and adhering to speed limits to ensure everyone's safety.

Rain and sea conditions

Regarding rainfall, the center confirmed that the chance of thunderstorms with rain and active winds stirring up dust and sand remains high in parts of the Jazan, Asir, and Al-Baha regions, extending northward towards the highlands of Makkah and Madinah. At sea, the Red Sea is experiencing rough conditions in its southern part, with winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour, particularly towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait, and waves that may reach heights of up to two meters. Meanwhile, the Arabian Gulf is experiencing relatively stable conditions, with varying wind directions and light to moderate waves, making it more suitable for maritime activities compared to the southwestern coast.
