Yemenia Airways launches direct flights between Socotra and Jeddah to support tourism
In a significant development for Yemen's air transport sector, Yemen Airways announced the launch of a direct flight route connecting the Socotra archipelago with Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This strategic step aims to enhance air connectivity and facilitate passenger travel, as well as support tourism on the UNESCO World Heritage island, which has suffered for years from accessibility challenges.
Trip details and schedule
Professor Mohsen Haidara, Deputy General Manager for Commercial Affairs at Yemen Airways, explained that the inaugural flight will depart on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. He indicated that this measure comes as part of a package of solutions to previous operational challenges, stressing that the company has completed all technical and logistical arrangements to ensure the safety and smooth operation of flights.
Haydara revealed the company's plan to adopt a regular weekly flight between Jeddah and Socotra in the next phase, which is considered a qualitative leap in the course of Yemeni air travel, as this direct route will contribute to:
- Revitalizing the tourism sector in the archipelago, which is a unique global eco-destination.
- Facilitating the movement of expatriates, students, and patients between the island and the Kingdom.
- To promote trade and economic exchange.
Socotra: A jewel of world heritage breaks its isolation
This step is significant given the global prominence of Socotra Island, nicknamed the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean” due to its unique biodiversity and hundreds of rare plant and animal species, such as the Dragon's Blood Tree. The difficulty of accessing the island in recent years has been a major obstacle to the influx of tourists and environmental researchers.
The direct route with Jeddah, a key air transport hub in the region, opens a new international window for Socotra, making it easier for foreign tourists to reach the island without the need for multiple, arduous transit stations that used to be time-consuming and laborious.
Human and strategic dimensions
In a related context, journalist and political analyst Salah al-Din al-Asadi told Al-Youm that the launch of this route represents a strategic shift that restores Socotra to its Arab roots. He pointed out that the immediate objective of the first flight is to evacuate foreign tourists stranded due to the disruption of some previous routes, reflecting the national carrier's commitment to its responsibility towards visitors to Yemen.
Al-Asadi added that thousands of Socotri residents in Saudi Arabia, as well as pilgrims performing Umrah and Hajj, have endured immense hardship traveling long and complex routes in recent years. This direct flight will end this humanitarian suffering, underscoring the deep social and historical ties between the people of the archipelago and the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia's role in supporting stability
Al-Asadi praised the pivotal role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting the Yemeni transportation sector, noting that this air link coincides with efforts to rehabilitate Yemeni airports with support from the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen. He explained that restoring airport operations and securing them is a fundamental pillar for the return of economic and political stability to the country, commending the efforts of the "Homeland Shield" forces and the Arab Coalition in securing sovereign facilities and ensuring the continuity of air traffic.
