Bizarre weather: Meteorologists warn of a cold wave approaching zero degrees Celsius

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important weather alert on Friday for residents of Tarif Governorate in the Northern Borders Region, warning of a cold wave that could cause a significant drop in temperatures. According to the center's report, the expected weather conditions will see temperatures ranging between 0°C and 3°C, necessitating caution.

The center explained via its automated early warning system that this weather system will begin to have its full effects starting at 2:00 AM on Saturday and will continue – God willing – until 8:00 AM that same day. These forecasts come amidst fluctuating weather conditions in the northern regions of the Kingdom, which are often susceptible to cold air masses coming from the north during this time of year.

Tarif... the gateway to winter in the Kingdom

The province of Tarif holds special geographical and climatic significance, being known as one of the coldest cities in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula. Due to its location in the far north and its high altitude, it serves as the primary passage for polar waves and cold air masses affecting the region. Historically, the province has recorded record-breaking sub-zero temperatures in previous winters, making its inhabitants highly accustomed to and adapted to such harsh conditions.

Safety and prevention recommendations

As this cold wave approaches, weather experts and public safety authorities emphasize the importance of following safety guidelines to prevent colds and other risks associated with low temperatures. Among the most important recommendations are:

  • Wear heavy winter clothing, especially for children and the elderly, when going out in the early morning hours.
  • Handle various heating methods with care, whether electric or based on coal and firewood, and ensure that enclosed spaces are well-ventilated to avoid suffocation accidents.
  • Exercise caution while driving in case of frost or fog associated with cold waves, which may lead to reduced horizontal visibility.

The role of the National Center for Meteorology

This alert comes as part of the National Center of Meteorology's ongoing efforts to monitor weather conditions and protect lives and property. The center utilizes the latest technologies and numerical simulation models to monitor climate changes and issue early warnings using different colors to reflect the level of risk, enabling government agencies and citizens to prepare in advance for any weather-related emergency.

General climate forecasts for the Kingdom indicate that the northern regions will remain under continuous monitoring during the coming weeks, as this time of year is considered the peak of activity for cold northerly winds, requiring continuous monitoring of official weather bulletins.
