Northern Borders Weather: Cold wave with temperatures dropping to -3°C

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued a yellow alert, warning of severe weather and a cold wave directly affecting the Northern Borders region, specifically the city of Tarif and several surrounding areas. This warning comes as part of ongoing monitoring of atmospheric conditions during the current winter season.
The center explained in its report that the region will experience a significant and sharp drop in temperatures, with minimum temperatures expected to range between 0°C and -3°C, creating conditions conducive to frost and freezing water in open areas. According to the report, the warning period begins at 2:00 AM on Sunday and continues until 7:00 AM, which is typically the time when the lowest temperatures of the day are recorded.
Tarif... the gateway to winter and continental climate
These warnings are particularly important given the geographical and climatic characteristics of the Northern Borders region, specifically the province of Tarif, which is historically known as one of the coldest areas in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula. Located at high altitudes, Tarif is directly affected by polar air masses originating from Siberia and Eastern Europe, making sub-zero temperatures a frequent occurrence at this time of year. The province has recorded record low temperatures in previous years, making it an important regional climate monitoring point.
Expected effects and safety guidelines
These cold waves have multiple effects beyond simply feeling cold. The formation of frost in the early morning hours can sometimes reduce horizontal visibility and cause vehicles to skid on highways, necessitating caution from those traveling on international roads connecting the Kingdom with its northern neighbors. These conditions also affect farmers and livestock breeders, requiring them to take measures to protect crops and livestock from freezing.
In this context, weather experts and relevant authorities consistently emphasize the importance of wearing heavy winter clothing, especially for children and the elderly, and ensuring adequate heating. They also stress the need for extreme caution when using coal or firewood indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, and the importance of relying on safe and approved heating methods. This warning is part of an early warning system designed to protect lives and property and enhance the preparedness of service providers to respond to emergency weather conditions.
