The new Kaaba cover was handed over to the custodians of the Holy House of God
In a solemn annual ceremony reflecting the rich Islamic heritage and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's profound commitment to the Two Holy Mosques, His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Makkah Region, presented the new Kiswah (cover) of the Holy Kaaba to the Chief Custodian of the Holy Kaaba, Dr. Saleh bin Zain Al-Abidin Al-Shaibi. The ceremony took place at the Governorate headquarters in Makkah, on behalf of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
This ceremony is a pivotal event preceding the Hajj season, as it marks the handover of the new Kaaba cover, which has been manufactured over the course of a year at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba Cover. The handover ceremony included the signing of a formal receipt between His Excellency the President of the General Authority for the Care of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, Sheikh Dr. Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Sudais, and the Chief Custodian, signaling the preparations for replacing the current cover with the new one on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the new Hijri year.
Historical background and established traditions
The covering of the Kaaba is not merely a modern tradition, but a custom deeply rooted in Islamic history and even before. The Kaaba was covered in pre-Islamic times, and this great honor continued into Islam, with caliphs and sultans vying for the privilege of crafting and presenting the Kaaba's covering. During the Saudi era, this ritual received significant attention, culminating in the establishment of a dedicated workshop for its production in Mecca in 1927. This workshop later evolved into the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba's Covering, a unique industrial complex employing the finest expertise and technologies to produce the Kaaba's covering in its most magnificent form.
The importance and impact of the event
The ceremony of presenting the Kiswah holds immense symbolic and religious significance for Muslims worldwide. Locally, this event reflects the Kingdom's leading role as custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and highlights the utmost care the Saudi leadership bestows upon the Holy Kaaba. Regionally and internationally, this annual tradition is a pivotal moment in the Islamic calendar, eagerly anticipated by millions of Muslims, as it symbolizes unity, renewal, and the glorification of God's sacred rites. Furthermore, the process of crafting the Kiswah, using the finest natural silk dyed black and embroidered with Quranic verses in gold and silver threads, showcases to the world the artistry and artistry of Islamic craftsmanship dedicated to serving the holiest sites on Earth.
It is worth noting that the custodianship of the Holy Kaaba is an ancient profession traditionally held by the Banu Shaybah family. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) entrusted them with the keys to the Kaaba on the day of the conquest of Mecca, saying to them, “Take it, O Banu Talhah, an eternal and inherited right; none but a tyrant will take it from you.” Since then, this noble family has inherited the honor of custodianship and care of the Sacred House, and they receive the new covering (Kiswah) every year.
