Coinciding with the International Day for Digital Learning, observed annually on March 19th, the role of modern technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, in reshaping the education system to become more flexible and inclusive is highlighted.

Historical context and local and international influence

Historically, the world witnessed a radical shift towards e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, where digital learning transformed from a mere supplementary tool into a lifeline for the continuation of the educational process. Internationally, organizations such as UNESCO support the integration of technology into education to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on quality education. Locally, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken significant steps in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Human Capability Development Program. National platforms like "Madrasati" have proven remarkably successful, serving as a global model for providing a comprehensive virtual learning environment that ensures the continuity of education and equal opportunities for all students across the Kingdom.

A forward-looking vision for modern education

In this context, Dr. Iman Al-Dhaheri, Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Dean of the Deanship of Research and Innovation at Jeddah University, affirmed that digital learning plays a crucial role in expanding access to knowledge. She explained that making digital content and platforms available to students anytime and anywhere promotes the principle of equal opportunity. She noted that Jeddah University prioritizes this approach through its "Education System Program," which aims to integrate modern technologies into university education and establish strategic partnerships with global platforms such as Huawei and Microsoft to broaden the horizons of self-directed learning. She also emphasized the importance of training academic staff to overcome the challenges of virtual environments, such as distraction and limited interaction, to ensure educational outcomes that meet the rapidly evolving needs of the job market.

Radical shifts in educational concepts

For his part, Dr. Abdullah Al-Darani, Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence and its Applications, explained that the International Day of Digital Learning is a pivotal occasion to emphasize the growing role of technology. He added that education is no longer tied to a specific time or place, but has become accessible through virtual classrooms and open resources, thus helping to overcome geographical and social challenges. Al-Darani pointed out that this transformation requires continuous investment in digital infrastructure and teacher training, while also stressing the role of families in guiding their children toward the safe use of the internet and the protection of personal data. He anticipates that artificial intelligence will provide personalized learning experiences that take into account the individual differences of students.

Comprehensive digital empowerment and awareness

For her part, engineer Araa Al-Hamzani, an artificial intelligence and data governance consultant, reviewed the contribution of digital learning in bridging the educational gap and making knowledge accessible to all without restrictions. She noted that government support in the Kingdom has significantly contributed to empowering women and expanding the participation of female talent in the digital knowledge industry. Al-Hamzani emphasized that technology is a tool for knowledge and empowerment, not merely a means of entertainment, stressing the need to instill a culture of digital literacy in new generations and to invest in technology for innovation while preserving national values ​​and identity, to ensure the development of a generation capable of leading a sustainable technological future.
