The direct Gulf electrical interconnection project with Oman has begun

The Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has officially announced the commencement of the direct electrical interconnection project between the GCCIA network and the Sultanate of Oman's network, in a pivotal step that reflects the GCC countries' commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure and ensuring sustainable energy security.
A strategic vision that transcends technical boundaries
In this context, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority, Mohsen Al-Hadrami, emphasized that this project transcends a mere technical expansion of the networks. He affirmed that the direct interconnection represents a true embodiment of the strategic vision set forth by the leaders of the GCC countries, which considers energy security a fundamental pillar of economic and political stability. Al-Hadrami pointed out that the project strengthens the depth of the Gulf grid and enhances its operational flexibility, making it a model to be emulated in regional partnerships for financing vital infrastructure.
Historical background and economic gains
This project builds upon the success of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), established in 2001 and operational since 2009. The unified grid has proven its economic and technical viability over the years, successfully preventing hundreds of major power outages in GCC countries and saving billions of dollars by reducing the need to build new power plants, thanks to the sharing of operational reserves among member states. The direct interconnection with the Sultanate of Oman represents a significant development aimed at increasing electricity transmission capacity and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.
Supporting energy transition and sustainability
For his part, Engineer Ahmed bin Ali Al-Ibrahim, CEO of the Authority, explained that the project is considered one of the largest expansion projects in the Authority's history. He added that the goal is not limited to meeting the increasing demand for electricity resulting from population and urban growth, but also extends to supporting the Gulf countries' ambitious renewable energy plans. The electrical interconnection helps address the challenges of intermittent solar and wind energy sources, thus facilitating the integration of these clean energy sources into national grids.
Future prospects and regional influence
This direct interconnection is expected to bolster the energy trading market among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, paving the way for future connections with other regional and international networks, such as those with Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt, and ultimately reaching Europe. The project also supports global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero energy neutrality, thus solidifying the GCC's position as a key and influential player on the global energy map.
