Desert Dream Train: Massive Saudi-Italian funding for luxury tourism
Saudi Arabia continues to solidify its position as a leading global destination for luxury tourism, with the "Desert Dream" train project receiving a significant boost through strategic partnerships and substantial funding. The Italian luxury hospitality company Arsenale, the project's developer, announced cooperation agreements with both the Italian company Simest and the Saudi Tourism Development Fund.
Under these agreements, the project will receive substantial financial support exceeding €70 million. The SEMEST Foundation, which supports the international expansion of Italian companies, will invest €37 million. In return, the Saudi Tourism Development Fund will provide a loan of €35 million, reflecting strong confidence in the success of this ambitious project that combines luxury with nature exploration.
An exceptional experience throughout history
The "Desert Dream" train is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, offering a luxurious travel experience reminiscent of a cruise, but on rail. With a capacity of only 66 passengers to ensure maximum privacy and comfort, the train costs approximately 30,000 Saudi Riyals per night. The journey departs from Riyadh, passing through stunning nature reserves, and continues to Al Qurayyat, with a particular focus on the ancient city of Al-Ula.
Tourism is at the heart of Vision 2030
This project is not merely a fleeting tourism investment; it is central to Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to diversify national income sources and reduce dependence on oil. Through these high-quality projects, the Kingdom seeks to attract affluent individuals and tourists looking for unique experiences, aiming to reach 150 million tourist visits annually by 2030. The tourism sector is considered one of the key pillars upon which the Kingdom relies to increase the non-oil sector's contribution to the GDP.
Al-Ula: A Jewel of World Heritage
The train route gains significance from its passage through Al-Ula Governorate, home to Hegra, the first Saudi site to be inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The journey offers visitors the opportunity to explore the ancient Nabataean civilization and stunning rock formations in a captivating desert environment, seamlessly blending entertainment with cultural and historical experiences.
Saudi-Italian economic cooperation
This partnership embodies the depth of economic relations between Saudi Arabia and Italy, with the Kingdom benefiting from Italy's long-standing expertise in design, luxury hospitality, and the railway industry. The participation of governmental and financial institutions from both countries underscores their shared commitment to developing sustainable and high-quality tourism infrastructure projects.
