Early cancer detection and nutrition: the first line of defense for prevention

As part of ongoing global and local efforts to combat cancer, leading doctors and specialists emphasized that the fight against the disease is not solely based on medical and surgical treatment, but begins with a strong societal awareness centered on early detection, proper nutrition, and psychological support. These statements coincide with World Cancer Day, a global event aimed at uniting efforts to reduce the impact of cancer on individuals and communities.

The importance and context of World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day, observed annually, is an opportunity to highlight gaps in cancer care and advocate for improved access to detection and treatment services. In this context, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce hosted an awareness meeting that brought together health experts to review the latest preventative strategies. Participants emphasized that health awareness is the cornerstone of transforming cancer from a fatal disease into a manageable and curable chronic condition.

Early detection: the first line of defense

Dr. Rania Darwish, a family medicine consultant, explained that the concept of early detection goes beyond simply conducting tests; it is a life strategy aimed at discovering cellular changes before they develop into malignant tumors, or at least in their early stages when the chances of recovery are highest. She noted that global medical statistics confirm a significant decrease in mortality rates when regular screening programs are implemented.

Dr. Darwish reviewed the most important internationally approved preventive tests:

  • Breast cancer: Women are advised to undergo mammograms starting from the age of forty, annually or every two years, to detect any small lumps that do not appear with self-examination.
  • Cervical cancer: It is detected through a routine cervical smear every three years, which helps to monitor precancerous changes and treat them immediately.
  • Colon cancer: It is detected through fecal occult blood testing or colonoscopy, and is a vital preventive procedure for both sexes.

An integrated treatment system and psychological support

Dr. Darwish emphasized that modern cancer treatment relies on a multidisciplinary team approach, where a comprehensive treatment plan (surgical, chemotherapy, and radiation) is developed to suit each patient's individual needs. She also highlighted the importance of psychological support as an integral part of the treatment protocol, stressing that a stable mental state for the patient and their family plays a pivotal role in enhancing the immune system's response to treatment and improving quality of life.

Therapeutic nutrition: Prevention starts at the table

For her part, Dr. Jacqueline Allam, a senior clinical nutritionist, focused on the close relationship between dietary patterns and the development of chronic and cancerous diseases. She explained that adopting healthy eating habits is not a luxury, but a medical necessity for preventing chronic inflammation, which can pave the way for cancer.

Dr. Allam addressed the nutritional challenges during the holy month of Ramadan, warning against excessive consumption of fried foods and sweets rich in sugars and hydrogenated fats. She pointed out that these habits lead to weight gain and the accumulation of visceral fat (fat surrounding the organs), which is a significant risk factor for many metabolic and cancerous diseases.

Tips for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle

The experts concluded the meeting with a set of practical recommendations to promote public health:

  • Nutritional balance: Focus on vegetables and fruits rich in antioxidants, and healthy proteins, while taking into account the special needs of kidney and liver patients.
  • Physical activity: Regular exercise helps reduce visceral fat and improve blood circulation. Dr. Allam emphasized that while Taraweeh prayers have spiritual and physical benefits, they do not replace dedicated physical activity such as brisk walking.
  • Consistency: Making healthy choices part of your daily routine, not just temporary solutions.
