Abdel-Aati affirms Egypt's support for Lebanese institutions and its security stability

Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty affirmed Cairo's unwavering support for Lebanon amidst the delicate circumstances facing the region, emphasizing the necessity of preserving Lebanon's security, stability, and sovereignty over all its territory. This came during his call with Prime Minister Tammam Salam, during which they reviewed the latest field and political developments, and Egypt reiterated its support for Lebanese state institutions to enable them to fulfill their responsibilities in protecting the Lebanese people's resources.

A highly complex regional context

These statements come at a highly sensitive time, as the Middle East witnesses an unprecedented escalation, particularly with the ongoing tensions on Lebanon's southern border and the repercussions of the war in the Gaza Strip. Egyptian diplomacy is working intensively to prevent Lebanon from being drawn into a wider conflict that could have dire consequences for the stability of the entire region. Cairo views with grave concern the attempts to broaden the scope of the conflict, which necessitates concerted Arab and international efforts to provide a political and diplomatic safety net for Beirut.

The importance of supporting Lebanese national institutions

The Egyptian position, as expressed by Minister Abdel-Aati, is based on a strategic vision that Lebanon's strength lies in the cohesion of its national institutions, foremost among them the Lebanese army and the security and legal institutions. Egypt consistently calls upon all Lebanese parties to prioritize the supreme national interest and to work diligently to end the presidential vacuum that is hindering the functioning of state institutions, emphasizing that electing a president and forming a fully empowered government are the first and essential steps toward restoring political and economic stability.

Historical and strategic dimensions of relations

These moves are based on a long history of strong fraternal relations between Egypt and Lebanon. Cairo has always played the role of “elder brother” and a historical supporter of Lebanon’s independence and Arab identity. Egyptian support is not limited to the political sphere; it extends to airlifts of humanitarian and medical aid during crises, reflecting the depth of the ties between the two peoples. Egypt considers Lebanon’s security an integral part of Egyptian and Arab national security. Therefore, Cairo continues its contacts with influential international powers, such as the United States, France, and the United Nations, to push for de-escalation and the implementation of relevant international resolutions, most notably Resolution 1701, to ensure security and stability on both sides of the border.

The impact of Lebanese stability on the region

Lebanon's stability is of paramount importance, extending far beyond its geographical borders. Maintaining the cohesion of the Lebanese domestic front is a safeguard for the entire region, thwarting attempts to exploit the country for settling regional scores. Hence, Minister Abdel-Aati's message affirms that Egypt will spare no effort in supporting all measures that bolster the resilience of the Lebanese people and their institutions in the face of the fierce political and security storms battering the region.
