Egypt supports Lebanon and demands Israel's complete withdrawal from its territory

The Arab Republic of Egypt reaffirmed its unwavering support for the sovereignty and stability of Lebanon, demanding a complete and unconditional Israeli withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territories. This stance comes within the framework of Egypt's ongoing diplomatic efforts to support stability in the region and prevent the escalation of tensions, particularly along Lebanon's southern border.

General context and historical background

This demand has its roots in decades of conflict, but it crystallized clearly in the aftermath of the July 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Following this war, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1701, which called for a complete cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in the area. Despite the passage of years since the resolution's adoption, its full implementation remains challenging, as Israel continues to occupy parts of Lebanese territory, most notably the Shebaa Farms, the Kfarshouba Hills, and the northern part of the village of Ghajar. Beirut considers this a blatant violation of its sovereignty and international law.

The importance of the Egyptian position and its expected impact

The Egyptian position is of paramount importance on several levels. Domestically, in Lebanon, this support provides a moral and political boost to the Lebanese government in its efforts to assert its sovereignty over all its territory, and strengthens the official Lebanese position in international forums. Regionally, Egypt, through this stance, reaffirms its pivotal role as a force for stability and peace in the Middle East, and as a key player striving to defuse crises through diplomatic channels and adherence to international law. This position also sends a clear message about the necessity of avoiding any military escalation that could drag the entire region into a large-scale war, especially given the current tensions. Internationally, Egypt's demand, with its considerable political and diplomatic weight, for the implementation of a UN resolution strengthens international pressure on Israel to abide by its obligations under international law and Security Council resolutions, and reminds the international community of its responsibilities to maintain international peace and security.

Egypt’s emphasis on the necessity of a complete withdrawal is not merely political support for Lebanon, but rather an integral part of a comprehensive Egyptian vision for resolving conflicts in the region, a vision based on respect for the sovereignty of states, the implementation of international legitimacy resolutions, and resorting to dialogue as the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace.
