The Egyptian Swimming Federation suspends its activities pending the trial of its leaders
In a rapidly developing situation within the Egyptian sports community, the Egyptian Swimming Federation officially announced the suspension of all its activities, just hours before the start of the first session of the trial of its board of directors and a number of executive officials in the case of the death of the young swimmer Youssef Mohamed, which recently shook public opinion.
The details of the tragic incident date back to the beginning of December, when the child Youssef Mohamed died after suffering a sudden fainting spell and cardiac arrest while participating in the Republic Swimming Championship for under 12 years old, which was hosted by the swimming pool complex at Cairo International Stadium, which sparked a wave of anger and demands to hold those responsible accountable.
Referral for urgent criminal trial
The suspension coincided with the Egyptian Public Prosecutor's decision to refer the president and members of the Swimming Federation's board of directors, the executive director, the head of the competitions committee, the tournament director, the head referee, and three members of the rescue team to urgent criminal trial. The court is scheduled to hear the case today, Thursday, December 25, 2025, where the defendants face charges of causing the child's death through negligence and failure to provide the necessary safety and rescue measures.
Statement of the Union and recourse to the International Federation
The Egyptian Swimming Federation issued an official statement explaining that, in its emergency meeting held on December 24, 2025, it decided to suspend all its activities out of respect for Egyptian public opinion, in consideration of the feelings of the family of the deceased swimmer, and in deference to the Egyptian judiciary and investigative authorities. The statement confirmed that the International Federation of Aquatics (FINA) had been notified of the current situation so that it could take whatever measures it deems appropriate regarding the management of the sport in Egypt, in accordance with international Olympic regulations and charters.
The implications of the decision and the future of the game
This decision has important administrative and legal dimensions on the sports level. According to international regulations, when a local federation is unable to perform its duties or its board of directors resigns, the international federation usually intervenes to appoint a “management committee” or a normalization committee to manage the daily affairs of the federation and ensure the continuation of sports activity, local competitions and international participations, until new elections are held, in order to avoid the cessation of activity that may harm the future of hundreds of swimmers.
The importance of safety procedures and sports medicine
This case opens a sensitive and crucial file concerning safety standards in Egyptian stadiums, particularly in youth tournaments. Sports experts assert that this incident will be a turning point, leading to stricter oversight of medical facilities, the availability of equipped ambulances, and qualified rescue teams at all tournaments. It is also expected that the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Egyptian Olympic Committee will implement more stringent protocols to ensure such tragic incidents are not repeated. The anticipated ruling in this case will set an important legal precedent, defining the responsibilities of sports federations regarding player safety.
