Eid al-Adha holiday 1445: Early start date in Makkah and Madinah schools

A proactive decision to facilitate the movement of pilgrims

The Saudi Ministry of Education announced that the Eid al-Adha holiday for the current academic year 1445 AH will begin early in public schools in the cities of Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, and Taif. According to this decision, students in these cities will begin their holiday at the end of the school day on Thursday, the 27th of Dhu al-Qi'dah 1445 AH, in an organizational measure aimed at supporting the intensive preparations for the Hajj season.

General context and importance of the decision

This measure is part of the comprehensive operational plan adopted annually by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ensure the success of the Hajj season, the world's largest religious gathering. Historically, Saudi government agencies, including the Ministry of Education, have implemented a series of proactive measures in cities experiencing high pilgrim traffic and related logistical challenges. Extending the school holiday is not merely an administrative decision; it is an integral part of a comprehensive strategy for crowd management, alleviating traffic congestion, and facilitating the movement of pilgrims and the service and security personnel working to ensure their comfort and safety.

Expected impact at the local and international levels

Domestically, the decision significantly reduces traffic congestion on main roads and streets leading to the holy sites, airports, and seaports. It also allows for the freeing up of school buildings for use as logistical support centers for government sectors involved in serving pilgrims, such as security forces, civil defense, and healthcare. Internationally, these meticulous organizational measures reflect the Kingdom's commitment to providing the best possible experience for millions of pilgrims from around the world, enhancing the safety and smooth flow of the Hajj and underscoring the Kingdom's ability to manage this global event with exceptional efficiency.

Additional details and return dates

The Ministry clarified that this early start applies to schools located within the four aforementioned educational districts, while the holiday in the rest of the Kingdom will begin as scheduled at the end of the school day on Monday, Dhul-Hijjah 4, 1445 AH. In a related development, the General Directorate of Education in the Makkah Region announced the transition to distance learning via the "My School" platform in several schools located within the vicinity of the Grand Mosque and along main roads, in order to support traffic and organizational plans. All students in all educational districts across the Kingdom are scheduled to return to their classrooms after the holiday ends on Sunday, August 18, 2024 (Safir 14, 1446 AH), to begin the new academic year.
