Eid prayers will be held in the mosques of Al-Hanakiya due to weather fluctuations
Instructions to hold Eid prayers only in mosques in Al-Hanakiya Governorate
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by its branch in the Madinah region and the Mosques Department in Al-Hanakiya Governorate, announced an important regulatory decision regarding the performance of Eid al-Fitr prayers for the year 1447 AH. It was decided that Eid prayers would be limited to enclosed mosques only, and that they would not be held in the open-air prayer areas that are traditionally used for such major Islamic occasions.
Reasons for the decision and the impact of weather fluctuations
The branch explained in an official statement that this exceptional decision comes in response to the expected weather fluctuations that Al-Hanakiya Governorate and its affiliated centers and villages may experience during the Eid holidays. This proactive step primarily aims to preserve the safety and health of worshippers and provide a safe and comfortable environment for performing religious rites, free from any harm that may result from sudden weather changes, such as heavy rainfall or surface winds that stir up dust and sand, which often accompany transitional weather periods in the region.
The role of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and government coordination
This measure reflects the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance's ongoing commitment to closely monitoring reports and alerts issued by the National Center for Meteorology. Within the framework of joint government coordination, the Ministry adapts its operational plans for mosques and prayer halls based on weather conditions, highlighting the advanced crisis and crowd management capabilities in the Kingdom and prioritizing the safety of citizens and residents. All preachers, imams, and volunteer teams have been instructed to ensure that designated mosques are fully equipped with all necessary services to accommodate the large number of worshippers.
The legal context for holding Eid prayers in mosques
From a religious and historical perspective, performing Eid prayers in open prayer grounds (salat) is a confirmed Sunnah (practice) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that Muslims are keen to revive. However, Islamic law is characterized by flexibility and ease, as its legal principles permit moving the prayer to mosques and congregational mosques in cases of legitimate excuses such as heavy rain, extreme cold, or strong winds that might cause hardship for worshippers, especially the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. This practical application of the objectives of Islamic law ensures that religious observances are performed without hardship or harm.
Eid prayer time and mosque readiness
Regarding the timing, the Department of Mosques, Da'wah, and Guidance in Al-Hanakiya Governorate clarified that the Eid al-Fitr prayer will be held approximately fifteen minutes after sunrise, according to the Umm al-Qura calendar. The department urged all worshippers to arrive early at the designated mosques to ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid congestion. It also confirmed that all mosques have undergone thorough cleaning, sanitization, and maintenance of their air conditioning, sound, and lighting systems, ensuring they are in pristine condition to welcome worshippers on this blessed day, a day of joy and celebration.
