Saudi markets are adorned with Eid sweets | High demand for chocolate

Eid al-Fitr approaches , the atmosphere in Saudi markets is filled with joy and celebration, with a noticeable increase in business activity at sweet and chocolate shops. These stores become a prime destination for shoppers seeking unique treats and Eid gifts, reflecting the deep-rooted social traditions associated with this blessed occasion.

The historical and cultural context of Eid hospitality

Historically, holidays in Arab and Islamic culture have been associated with offering the most delicious foods and sweets as a symbol of generosity and hospitality. In the past, families relied primarily on making traditional sweets at home, such as date-filled cookies (ma'amoul) and ghraybeh. With the passage of time and the development and opening up of markets, these time-honored traditions have blended with modern touches, resulting in a diverse array of options today, from fine chocolates to Eastern and Western sweets. Despite this significant evolution, these traditional treats remain prominent as key symbols of holiday celebrations, welcoming guests, and exchanging gifts among relatives and friends, thus strengthening social bonds and spreading joy.

Economic recovery and active trade

Economically, the holiday season is a major driver for the retail and food industries. The importance of this event is highlighted locally by the economic boom in Saudi Arabia's chocolate industry. Statistics indicate the presence of approximately one thousand local factories, covering half of the national consumption, reflecting significant growth in domestic production and a high capacity to meet increasing market demands. The holy city of Mecca and various regions of the Kingdom are currently witnessing a surge in shopping activity, as people flock to purchase a variety of sweets to offer to guests during family visits on Eid morning.

Special offers and early preparations

Demand is noticeably high for luxury chocolates and oriental sweets, as well as for specially designed gift boxes for Eid, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different tastes and budgets. Many shops have introduced special offers and new product ranges to attract shoppers during this period, which is considered one of the busiest times of the year. Several vendors explained that demand typically begins to increase during the last ten days of Ramadan and peaks in the days immediately preceding Eid.

In this context, Ismail Bakhsh, a confectionery shop owner, said, “Every year we notice a surge in demand for luxury chocolates and gift boxes as Eid approaches, as many families are keen to offer them to guests or exchange them as gifts among relatives.” He pointed out that shops prepared early for this season by ensuring sufficient quantities of products and offering a diverse range to suit all tastes, emphasizing that the most popular items this year are chocolates filled with nuts and dates, in addition to traditional Middle Eastern sweets.

Eid preparations and shoppers' tastes

For their part, a number of shoppers expressed their eagerness to buy sweets and chocolates as part of their Eid preparations, noting that purchasing Eid sweets is a tradition without which the joy of Eid is incomplete, as it reflects the festive atmosphere in homes. Shopper Mohammed Al Marzouqi indicated that he prefers to buy ready-made boxes of chocolates to give as gifts during Eid visits, explaining that the variety of designs and packaging helps in choosing what suits the occasion.

Several industry professionals confirmed that the holiday season presents a significant opportunity to boost sales in the confectionery market. Shops experience a noticeable increase in sales compared to regular days, driven by deeply rooted social traditions that families across the Kingdom are keen to maintain. Sweets and chocolates remain an integral part of Eid al-Fitr celebrations, adding a special touch to hospitality tables and contributing to strengthening social bonds.
