A violator was apprehended for polluting the environment in Medina | Saudi Environmental Security

The Special Forces for Environmental Security announced the arrest of a Pakistani resident in the Madinah region for a clear violation of environmental regulations. The violation involved dumping concrete materials and waste in unauthorized locations. The forces explained that this act resulted in environmental pollution and soil damage, and confirmed that the necessary legal procedures were applied to the violator, who was then referred to the relevant authorities for further action.

General context and the Kingdom's efforts to protect the environment

This incident comes amidst the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to enhance environmental protection and achieve environmental sustainability, a key pillar of Saudi Vision 2030. Recent years have witnessed the launch of ambitious initiatives such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, aimed at combating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing vegetation cover. Within this framework, the Special Forces for Environmental Security were established as the executive arm of the Ministry of Interior, tasked with monitoring and enforcing environmental regulations throughout the Kingdom and addressing any practices that could harm natural resources and wildlife.

The importance of the incident and its expected impact

The importance of enforcing this rule lies in its powerful deterrent effect on anyone contemplating harming the environment. The indiscriminate dumping of concrete waste not only mars the city's appearance but also causes significant environmental damage, degrading soil quality, inhibiting plant growth, and potentially contaminating groundwater with harmful chemicals. Locally, such measures contribute to preserving the cleanliness and beauty of a city of immense religious and historical significance like Medina. Nationally, the application of strict penalties reinforces the integrity of the environmental system and encourages adherence to it, thus accelerating the Kingdom's progress toward achieving its sustainability goals.

Deterrent penalties for violators

The Special Forces for Environmental Security emphasized that the penalty for engaging in any activity or action that directly or indirectly damages or pollutes the soil, or negatively impacts its use, is a fine of up to (10) million Saudi Riyals. The Forces also urged citizens and residents to immediately report any instances of environmental or wildlife violations by calling (911) in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and (999) and (996) in the rest of the Kingdom, assuring them that all reports will be treated with complete confidentiality.
