Eritrean President visits Jeddah Islamic Port: Strengthening logistical cooperation
His Excellency President Isaias Afwerki, President of the State of Eritrea, paid an important inspection visit to Jeddah Islamic Port today, where he was received by the President of the General Authority for Ports “Mawani”, Engineer Suleiman bin Khalid Al-Mazrou, and a number of prominent leaders in the maritime transport sector in the Kingdom.
This visit comes at a vital time, reflecting the depth of the strategic relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Eritrea, particularly with regard to the security of the Red Sea and the promotion of intra-regional trade.
A tour of the Red Sea Gateway station
During the visit, the Eritrean president received a detailed presentation on the Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), a leading national operator of marine terminals. The presentation highlighted the terminal's vast capabilities and the smart technologies used in container handling, which contribute to faster and more precise loading and unloading operations.
His Excellency also toured the company’s various facilities, gaining firsthand insight into the advanced operational services and automated systems adopted by Saudi ports to enhance operational efficiency, thereby strengthening the Kingdom’s competitiveness as a global logistics hub.
Strategic importance and regional dimension
This visit is of particular importance given the strategic geographical location of both Saudi Arabia and Eritrea on the shores of the Red Sea. This waterway is one of the world's most vital trade routes, through which a significant portion of international trade and energy traffic passes. Therefore, coordination among the Red Sea littoral states is essential for ensuring maritime security and fostering shared economic opportunities.
Historically, the Kingdom has close ties with the countries of the Horn of Africa, and always seeks to support stability and development in that region, which positively impacts regional security and increases opportunities for mutual investment.
Jeddah Islamic Port: The First Gateway for Trade
Jeddah Islamic Port is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's primary port on the Red Sea coast, handling the largest share of inbound and outbound maritime trade. The port boasts a strategic location on global shipping lanes connecting three continents (Asia, Europe, and Africa).
As part of its ongoing development plans, the Kingdom is working to increase the port’s capacity and modernize its infrastructure to be able to receive the world’s largest container ships, which the Eritrean President witnessed during his tour, thus opening up prospects for exchanging expertise in the field of port management and operation between the two countries.
Vision 2030 and Logistics
This visit aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to solidify the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. Through these partnerships and high-level visits, the Kingdom seeks to enhance international cooperation and develop its maritime transport system to serve shared interests and support sustainable economic growth in the region.
