FIFA and Trump: A $75 million project to build stadiums in Gaza

In a move with significant sporting and humanitarian dimensions, FIFA announced a strategic agreement with the Peace Council, an organization launched by former and current US President Donald Trump, aimed at revitalizing sports infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. The project, estimated at $75 million, is a direct response to the extensive damage inflicted on sports facilities by recent Israeli military operations and attacks.

Project details: A comprehensive plan to advance sports

Under this agreement, FIFA will raise the necessary funds to implement an ambitious engineering plan that includes the construction of 56 new sports facilities geographically distributed to cover all governorates of the Gaza Strip. These facilities are divided into several levels to ensure the widest possible benefit for the community

  • Mini-pitches: Establishing 50 mini-pitches in strategic locations near schools and densely populated residential complexes, to provide safe spaces for children to practice sports.
  • Legal stadiums: Construction of 5 full-size football stadiums equipped to host official matches and training sessions for clubs in various neighborhoods.
  • National Stadium: Building a new national stadium with international specifications that can accommodate 20,000 spectators, to be a showcase for Palestinian sports in the future.
  • FIFA Academy: Establishing a state-of-the-art academy affiliated with the International Federation to discover and develop emerging football talents.

Human and social dimensions that go beyond football

FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized that this partnership with the Peace Council extends beyond mere construction to encompass community and psychological recovery in conflict-affected areas. Infantino explained that the program will primarily focus on creating employment opportunities for local residents during the construction and operational phases, as well as integrating young people into meaningful activities that offer a respite from the trauma of war.

The FIFA president added: “We will work to organize regular leagues for boys and girls, stimulate the local community through sport, and support small businesses that will be established around these sports facilities.”.

General context and importance of the initiative

This initiative comes at a time when Palestinian sports in Gaza are paralyzed, with the war having destroyed most stadiums, clubs, and sports federation headquarters. This project is seen as a beacon of hope for thousands of athletes who have lost their training facilities, and for children who need spaces to play and help them overcome the psychological trauma of the war.

For his part, Donald Trump stated that FIFA would lead the efforts to raise the $75 million, stressing the importance of these football-related projects in promoting peace and stability in the region through the universal language of sport.
