German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, accompanied by a high-level delegation, arrived in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, today on an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia aimed at discussing ways to enhance joint cooperation between the two friendly countries in various fields.
Among those who welcomed the German Chancellor upon his arrival at King Khalid International Airport were His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Governor of Riyadh Region, and His Highness Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, Mayor of Riyadh. Also present were the Minister of Finance, Mr. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Jadaan (the accompanying minister), reflecting the economic importance of this visit, as well as the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Fahd Al-Hathal, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom, Mr. Michael Kindsgrapp, the Acting Director of the Regional Police, Major General Mansour bin Nasser Al-Otaibi, and the Deputy Chief of Royal Protocol, Mr. Fahd Al-Sahil.
Dimensions of the visit and its strategic importance
This visit is of paramount importance in both its timing and substance, as it comes within the framework of the strong historical ties that bind the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Federal Republic of Germany. The Kingdom is a key strategic partner for Germany in the Middle East region, particularly in light of the major economic transformations it is undergoing as part of Vision 2030, which opens up vast opportunities for cooperation with the German economy, the largest in Europe.
Observers believe that the presence of Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan as the accompanying minister to the German guest clearly indicates that the economic file will top the discussions, as the two countries seek to enhance trade and investment exchange, and cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, green hydrogen, technology, and industry, which are sectors in which Germany has global expertise and which the Kingdom gives top priority in its development plans.
Strengthening the regional and international role
On the political front, the German Chancellor's visit underscores Riyadh's pivotal role in maintaining regional and international security and stability. The visit is expected to include an exchange of views on current regional issues and shared challenges, further strengthening diplomatic coordination between Berlin and Riyadh.
Saudi-German relations are witnessing remarkable development, reflecting the desire of both leaderships to push these relations to broader levels, in a way that serves the interests of the two friendly peoples and contributes to strengthening global peace and prosperity. This visit represents a new step in the path of consolidating the partnership between the European economic power and the influential power in the Islamic and Arab world.
