Project to code the columns of the Grand Mosque: Details and achievements
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques announced a new milestone, adding to its ongoing achievements. It successfully completed the project coding the columns of the Grand Mosque , in addition to equipping the Sa'i area with 84 new directional and informational signs. This strategic project is part of the Authority's continuous efforts to develop the spatial guidance system within the Grand Mosque, directly contributing to facilitating navigation and movement for pilgrims, and guiding crowds with high efficiency and professionalism.
General context and historical development of the architecture of the Grand Mosque
Throughout Islamic history, the Grand Mosque in Mecca has received immense attention and care. Since the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Grand Mosque has undergone unprecedented and massive expansions to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of pilgrims. With this enormous horizontal and vertical expansion of the mosque's spaces and multiple levels, the urgent need arose for innovative solutions to facilitate the movement of visitors and prevent overcrowding or getting lost. Hence, the idea of coding the columns of the Grand Mosque emerged as a developmental step aligned with the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which aims to facilitate the hosting of 30 million pilgrims annually and provide them with the highest quality services so they can perform their rituals with complete peace and ease.
Details of the project to code the columns of the Grand Mosque and the directional signs
The Authority explained that the project, in its current phase, includes the installation of advanced geographic information system (GIS) panels on the pillars of the Grand Mosque throughout the entire ground floor. This measure aims to support the mechanisms for dividing and managing the physical spaces more accurately and efficiently. In a related context, the entire Sa'i area has been enhanced with the addition of 84 new directional and informational signs. These signs were designed according to the highest technical and engineering standards to ensure their complete clarity and readability from a distance, taking into account the diverse languages and nationalities of the visitors to the Grand Mosque. These signs are also electronically and physically linked to the main gates, walkways, and key landmarks within the Grand Mosque, through improved dimensions that accommodate the flow of movement and crowd density.
The importance of the event and its expected impact at the local and international levels
This project is of paramount importance and will have a far-reaching positive impact. At the local and operational levels, it will positively affect crowd management, reduce instances of visitors getting lost, alleviate the burden on security and organizational personnel working in the field, and allow resources to be directed to other services. At the regional and international levels, this development sends a reassuring message to millions of Muslims worldwide that their spiritual journey to the Holy Land is being conducted with care and attention. Providing a distinguished, safe, and comfortable environment for worship enhances the positive perception of the Kingdom's outstanding services to the pilgrims.
An integrated system to serve the guests of God
In conclusion, this guidance project is part of a comprehensive system of developmental and technological initiatives implemented by the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques. Digital transformation and meticulous field organization are fundamental pillars for enhancing the level of services provided, ensuring an unforgettable spiritual and devotional experience that blends the authenticity of the place with modern technology to serve Islam and Muslims worldwide.
