Gulf Champions League 2027: A new system and historic expansion
The Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation announced a significant development for the Gulf Champions League, revealing details of the third edition for the 2026-2027 season. The tournament will see an increase in participating clubs from 8 to 12, with a new allocation mechanism based on the Asian Football Confederation's rankings. The draw for the tournament is scheduled for September 9th, with the competition taking place between October 13th, 2026 and April 30th, 2027.
A strong comeback for a prestigious regional championship
These changes are intended to enhance the prestige of the tournament, which holds a significant legacy in the region. Before its suspension in 2015, the Gulf Clubs Cup, first held in 1982, represented the pinnacle of club football competition in the Gulf and witnessed the crowning of some of the biggest names in Gulf football history. The tournament's return in its new format as the "Gulf Clubs Champions League" marks a revival of this important sporting tradition and provides an additional competitive platform for Gulf clubs aspiring to regional glory, especially those that have not qualified for major Asian tournaments.
A new system for greater competition in the Gulf Champions League for clubs
According to the new mechanism approved by the Gulf Union, the 12 slots will be distributed based on the ranking of the member national associations with the Asian Football Confederation for the 2026-2027 season. The associations have been divided into two levels to ensure fairness in distribution and strong competition:
- The first category (two seats for each federation): It includes the highest-ranked federations, which are: the Saudi, Emirati, Qatari, and Iraqi federations.
- The second category (one seat per federation): includes the Omani, Bahraini, Kuwaiti, and Yemeni federations.
The Gulf Federation has sent an official invitation to national federations to nominate their clubs to be represented in the tournament within a maximum period of two weeks from June 17, 2026.
Strict standards to ensure the quality of participation
To maintain the high technical level of the tournament, the Gulf Football Federation stressed the necessity for nominated clubs to be among the highest-ranked in their respective domestic leagues, after the allocation of slots for clubs participating in AFC competitions has been finalized. The Federation affirmed its right to accept or reject the nomination of any club that does not adhere to these criteria and to select a suitable alternative to ensure the tournament's strength and appeal.
Expected impacts on the future of Gulf football
The increased number of participating teams and the implementation of a ranking system are expected to have a significant positive impact on football in the region. Locally, the tournament will provide a valuable opportunity for more clubs to gain valuable continental experience, raising the level of players and intensifying competition in domestic leagues. Regionally, this expansion will strengthen sporting ties between the Gulf countries and create a competitive atmosphere that will contribute to the game's popularity. Furthermore, the financial allocations for participating teams will provide crucial economic support for the development of these clubs. This development builds upon the organizational and technical success of the first two editions, with Iraq's Duhok Club winning the inaugural title and Qatar's Al Rayyan Club claiming the second.
